Where to Find Other Successful People

by Sean Rasmussen on January 12, 2008

If you want to attract success, you need to surround yourself with signs of success – people especially. But where can you find these people? So many experts will tell you to surround yourself with examples of success, but when you aren’t already surrounded by these people, how exactly do you meet them?

Redefine Success

What may be happening is that you are limiting yourself in terms of what you consider success. Instead of looking for someone who is doing the things and has the things that you want in life, start looking for anyone in your life who has had some measure of success. Just seeing someone succeed in something can help to inspire your own goals – no matter how different they might be. Look at your family, your friends, and even your coworkers for examples of success.

Reach Out

Of course, you don’t need to actually be in the physical presence of someone successful in order to be motivated by them. You can find people you admire online through blogs and websites and simply keep up to date with them. By posting in the comments sections or by emailing them directly, you can begin a relationship in which you become inspired and they feel like they are helping someone else fulfill their dreams.

Read about Success

No matter what you want to do, someone else has probably already done it before you. All you need to do is to look for their success story online or in books to have something to read over and over whenever you get down about your progress. Post these stories in places where you can read them often. Leave the books next to your bed and read them again and again. Someone else has done it – and so can you! Who knows? Maybe you’ll write your story next.

Have a most outstanding day

Thanks Warren.
Sorry about the late reply. I just got back from nearly 2 weeks in Fiji and my blogging has been kept to bare necessities only due to the slow internet speed over there.
Regards – Sean

There is an interesting quote that applies here – “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” It is attributed to Jim Rohn, an American author and motivational speaker.

One of the important ways that humans learn is by behaviour modelling – learning by copying or mimicking behaviour that we are exposed to. The whole ‘money see, monkey do’ kind of thing. So the more time we spend with people the more of an impact they have on us and the mindsets we develop, because we model their behaviour (whether consciously or unconsciously).

When trying to redefine success, it requires not only overcoming old ideas and habits, but also seeking new role models who can help model successful behaviour for us, however, that ‘successful behaviour’ might be defined.

Perhaps, the awareness that one wishes to do something differently and seeking new ways, is showing us we are already on the path of change.

As Tom has mentioned, if we check our incomes as well as our attitudes towards life, we are likely to be an ‘average’ of our five closest friends/relatives, as we are more widely influenced by our close peers’ behaviours, than any other kind of educational model. Usually this is quite an unconscious way of living life too – as not many of us would consciously choose to work an average job, with average or below average income!..

Awareness on the other hand, as Jo states above, is the catalyst to creating the change we so desperately seek & need, to keep growing & moving forward in our lives. If we are lacking in local successful mentors in our lives, it doesn’t matter, as the internet opens the door to all who seek new knowledge & guidance! And as we learn & grow ourselves, leading by example, we can then consciously help others around us to step up to their next level too. :)

Luckily, I am married to a success. My wife, talented in many respects, is in one way one of the most successful people in the world, if not the most successful.

That’s a very fortunate thing to be able to say and live Wal. To be surrounded by the one’s you love is one thing, to be surrounded by one you consider to be success is just icing on the cake :)

Hi Sean,

I don’t personally know anyone who has the kind of success I’m after. So, I have surrounded myself with lots of autobiographies of people who have achieved great success; motivational books and of course, some fantastic bloggers.

I try to choose my friends more for their attitudes to life, than how successful they are, not that I’d say no to having some super successful friends. Now that I’m part of the YOTA forum, it definitely helps me to be able to communicate with like-minded people.

The YOTA forum has definitely been an eye opening and direction changing event that I am thankful for discovering. People that I have met, spoken to and learned off is something that has continued to force a change in me.

Reading about the successful achievements of many (no matter how big or small) is something that always put a smile on my face and a fire in my belly ;)

Hi Sean,
Lots of successful people around. Mimicking what they do is different as they all succeeded in different aspects of lives they undertook. Reading & posting comments and following someone like you, I think I’ve already found a successful way of being successful..

Thanks for helping all of us to be successful!

Cheers
