Every single invention this world has ever seen, started as a dream. If it wasn’t a dream, it was probably a thought spawned from a dream. So why do so many people treat dreamers like they are so different. Sure they are different but that is a good thing. Parents and the education system discourage our children from dreaming by saying things like:
“Stop Dreaming”
“He’s a Day-dreamer. He won’t amount to much”
“You want what? You’re dreaming!“
Dreaming Is The Cornerstone Of Success
Isn’t it funny that we try to stem the flow of success in children at such an early age? Because that is exactly what it is; Success. Dreaming is the cornerstone of creativity and success. How else would you create something totally new, that has never before existed or been possible, that is science fiction now and a part of the future? Children are born with a natural abundance of creativity that most adults lose during their path of conforming into society.
Imagine you have a big idea in your head – perhaps to become a firefighter or to finish college (finally), but you find yourself sabotaging yourself again and again. You make excuses not to research these goals or you simply don’t actively pursue them, even though you long to make them come true. In these situations, you need to ask yourself where your dream is coming from and why you’ve dreamt it in the first place
From the time we are young, we are able to dream about things that are greater than ourselves. Whether it’s material things or it’s experiences, we hold these ideas in our heads. They often come from a longing to make up for something in our lives – for example, if we want to be a doctor, it might be because we’ve seen someone become very ill or we want to follow in the footsteps of our parents or friends.
Dreams can come from:
• Friends
• Family
• Religion
• Media
• Your talents
By discovering the root cause that has spurned you onto certain dreams, you can begin to motivate yourself to actually realize these dreams – even if it seems like they’re far out of reach.
The Image Of Abundant Creativity
Think of a dream for a moment. Maybe one that you had recently. Try to hold this image in your head as a reminder whenever you begin to make excuses or put things off. Or you might want to picture yourself in the dream situation. Think about all of your senses and what it will be like to be a part of your dream. Harness the adundance of creativity that lies within you.
Your dream comes from you and uncovering the “why” will help you get started. Though you might not be living your dream tomorrow, you will start living in the possibility of your dream right now.
Have a most outstanding day

Wow, you just have enlightened me with this post. I am a dreamer. I have lots of dreams like being successful in the field that I am right now, retire happily and contented in my old age. Eventually human as we are we tend to lose the grip, to continue reaching for our goals in life and make our dream come true. And I will personally consider your tip and start applying it to my everyday life.
“Your dream comes from you and uncovering the “why” will help you get started. Though you might not be living your dream tomorrow, you will start living in the possibility of your dream right now.”
Thanks a lot!
Dreaming is good! All inventions and intentions start with a dream. We punish people in our society for “dreaming”, yet they are the inovators of a brighter future. Is it somehow possible that some of us don’t want dreamers around to create a different and better future?
I think it very interesting that the Australian aborigines speak about “the dreamtime” when they are referrring to the creation of their environment.
“Is it somehow possible that some of us don’t want dreamers around to create a different and better future?”
I don’t think so.What we have today started with a dream. Thomas Edison and the rest were able to invent a light bulb because they dreamed of a brighter world. Martin Luther King dreamed of equality, and now we believe that all men are equal. All of us are dreamers and I believe we are striving to attain our dreams and goals everyday that is why we are living and heading a happy and successful life. ^_^
Let us all keep dreaming and then work for it.
“Your dream comes from you and uncovering the “why” will help you get started. Though you might not be living your dream tomorrow, you will start living in the possibility of your dream right now.”
I think there are people that don’t want dreamers around to create a different and better future. Because they are scared.
They don’t want to be left behind but by the same token are so stuck in their rut to even remotely dream a way out.
They are generally the people that say
“Stop Dreaming”
“He’s a Day-dreamer. He won’t amount to much”
“You want what? You’re dreaming!“
It;s so right, without dreams we wouldn’t go anywhere. We would do the same things that always have been done and miss out on so much.
Most of us are (at least a bit) afraid of changes, so sticking whit what you have is the safer option. But also the less rewarding one.
So next time someone calls you “a dreamer” take it as a compliment and be sorry for the person who is not (daring to) following his/her own dreams.

I agree with you that non-conformity is often the key to realizing dreams. Many forces in the physical world seem to be pushing people to diverge from what they believe in or hope to achieve. To realize what you need to do to get where you want to go is the first step to really making it happen.
Just saw the Oprah episode of the author of Twilight – it all started as a dream. I guess that is a little different but at least she had the drive and passion to follow through…

Dreaming is important, otherwise I think nothing would ever change. Unfortunately as kids most of us get told to “stop dreaming and start working” instead of helping the child to create an action plan to turn the dream into reality.
I pull my hat in admiration of all the kids, youth and adults that follow their dream and make it reality despite all the opposition they have to face on a daily basis. We need more people that hold on to their dream and connect it with action. These people are great role models!

Whenever I hear “I Have a Dream” I think of Martin Luther King he said that in his 1963 speech calling for equality. He dared to dream that all Americans would be equal.
How proud would he be today.
That is a great example Rita. I love Martin Luther King speech – it is so inspiring. And every time I hear it I get goose pimples. Sean should put the YouTube video of his speech in this blog post.
I never ever tire of hearing it.

I have a big piece of card up on the wall in our dining area headed – Every day in every way I’m getting better and better. It is our dream board. It has pictures of things we want. In writing this I realise it doesn’t have pictures of my giving goals. Hmmm it needs some updating.l
One of the boys examples – my oldest son is in a development squad for tennis with the goal of making the Otago team and eventually play for NZ. I photoshopped his photo into an Otago team photo. While watching the NZ Heinken open tennis competition at the start of the year, right out of the blue he said “I’m going to play in this tournament in 2020.” He didn’t even stop to calculate how old he would be. It was just so awesome to hear.
Not only should we dream, we should write it down to take ownership of it and give it a date.
As you stated Sean – where would we be today if someone somewhere didn’t have a dream? That dream would not have been put down on paper and that idea would not have resulted in something.
The PC, , internet, iPhone – all dreams that have gone on to change the world.

Martin Luthor King had a dream. A very famous dream that inspired millions of people. It took a lot of hard work by many people and cost him his life but that dreaming had magnificent results and impacted on the equality for black people in the USA. And from that there are many oppressed peoples around the world who are still inspired by one mans dream.
A very powerful post. I completely agree that often people give up on dreams due to what society expects or demands of them. It is a strong willed person who can persevere with their dreams in spite of what others may say against them and their dreams. Hence why those who do are so important as an example to others.
The ability of children to have great goals and grand plans is something that should be cherished and fostered, lest it wither. Voltaire is quoted as saying “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”. Wouldn’t it be great if people thought this way about dreams? That notwithstanding you might not agree with someone’s dream, that person (of any age) has a right to hold that dream, to chase after it and not have it unduly crushed. A bit optimistic perhaps, but the world sure would be a very interesting place with less conformity around.

G’day Tom,
I love your Voltaire quotation:- “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”. Most profound !
Sad as it seems, I do not / do not recall dreams except on very rare occasions – that is dreams while I’m sleeping, BUT daytime is different for me in that I am constantly having daydreams after daydreams. They are mainly about my goals and Bucket List and are often completely selfish. Hmmmmmmm …….thought provoking.
As I said below and earlier, I was the bane of my teachers existence, because the body was in class but the mind was either playing piano or flying a dangerous mission [ WW2 ]

I dream every day. It is what motivates me to keep on doing what I need to do to make my online business a success. I would love to say that I am making money online but so far I have not made $1. Yet every day I get up and do what needs to be done. I post, I search out training, I open my mind to new possibilities.
One day my dream will come true!!!!!!!!!!

I also have not received that first payment there is cash sitting in google.
I won’t be giving up either.
I have come such a long way it would be foolish to throw away all the work I have done so far.
One thing I have found, those around me don’t realise you have to put the work in and believe in yourself, and that it takes time to achieve your goals, and it does not happen overnight.
Rita
G’day Rita,
As it says in SLOA, efficient action is the cornerstone to success. We must do the hard yards. I’m delighted to hear you will not give up . Beauty !!!!!!!!
Sad how some people think you can dream it and that’s all they have to do. Like learning piano it’s 90 % perspiration and 10 % inspiration. My teacher’s saying.

I love dreamers, the bigger the better I say. I have watched your absolute determination for the past year and now in this competition.
Congratulations for continually taking massive efforts because you do it for all of us in the YOTA team.
Ray, that’s great to hear. I am so inspired by your dedication to your dream and your persistence.
Sharing this helps all of us to know we are not alone on the path to success.
Hi Sean,
I have always been way too serious to live the life of a dreamer. I’ve always wanted a better life but I’ve been much more focused on the here and now. I did whatever I had to do to get through everyday. While there is some satisfaction in this, there’s not that excitement of doing something that makes you truly happy.
It took me a long time to realize that I should have dreams. I should be doing something that makes me happy as opposed to something safe. Now I am learning to live the life of a dreamer.
Hi Jazz,

playing it safe is the way we have been brought up and it was meant to be good for us. But if you loose all your dreams, what is there left? We humans are a very creative race, and to create you need dreams.
I am glad to hear that you started dreaming again

I guess we all start out as dreamers but Parents, schools, and society all try to “Teach” that out of us. Today’s children have so much more opportunity to allow their creative dreams to flourish from the start.
I have my dreams and I know I will realise them fully soon
Sean a very powerful post.
Its unfortunate how society, or should I say people in society, try to keep you down and stifle your dreams.
I recall thinking at school how in earth South Africa got away with apartheid. Why wasn’t anybody doing anything about it.
Fortunately Nelson Mandela had a dream and lived to see it come true.
I can see my dreams becoming reality very soon

I have always been a dreamer. One of my school teachers used to call me ‘the bright ideas boy.’ To me that is the same thing. It’s hard to explain even to my wife. She might say why did you say that? I might reply, I just dreamed 100 things and thought I would say one of them and that was it. I am successful in one area of my life and I dreamed a lot of my way there. Edison dreamed his inventions. The sewing machine needle was revealed in a dream to the inventor.

Dreaming – I was one of those students in the class room “oh she is such a dreamer she wont amount to much”, “gee she does not concentrate too much because she is off with the fairies”…..I was always dreaming, and writing books in my head.
The cornerstone of Success starts with a dream. Keep on dreaming and you will have all your hearts desire. I have had a dream to be a midwife forever. Today I started a nursing course, that will lead into another nursing course, and next year I will be studying to be a midwife. You are never too old to chase a dream, and always young enough to start.

Like Lisa above, I was the bane of my teachers existence ! My body was in class, but my mind was either flying a bombing mission, shooting down enemy aircraft with my Spitfire / Typhoon / Tempest / Mosquito / or Beaufighter or piano playing in a swish Hollywood nightclub or Jazz club, just like in the movies. There was always the last weekends AFL match to analyse and see where our team could have done better – it seemed to be more important than algebra, geometry, or English expression.
My report book always alluded to the absence of my mind in spite of the presence of the body, and the phrase ” He’s such a Dreamer ” was very common.
Most frequent remarks in class included ” wake up Harry – where are you flying to today ” OR ” Harry, are you playing solo or with an orchestra ”
Should I apologise to the ghosts of my teachers ?
Harry Lynn´s last blog ..How Proud Can One Be ?
Hi Sean,
I also grew up believing it was not a good practice to be a dreamer. I have not ever put any importance on dreams at all. If I even saw a book in a bookshop on dreams I would think “what a con that is”, and “how silly is that”. I don’t think I dream at all but if I do I don’t remember them. If on a rare occasions I do happen to remember something when first waking up – all it does is cause me realize that my subconscious is in a terrible mess and that I should do something about it. Something like maybe reprogramming it, somehow. I soon forget about it though, quickly and put any idea about reprogramming aside as not being important.
Perhaps I need to reconsider and do work on myself to encourage positive (sensible) dreams to happen. That is if they are going to help me along with wealth creation? That then would be worthwhile looking into.
Jill.
So very true Sean
The source of all inventions came about because someone once dreamed.
The most important thing is to take action to realize that dream.
Many people dream that they want to be rich etc etc but year in and year out they are still in the same situation because they haven’t taken action
Danny
I think that we need to be sure what actually dream is. I would say that “good dreaming” is being connected with Nature. And the other kind of dreaming would be something like “wishing”.
I agree that most parents and in fact our western society discourages people from dreaming. So in fact it leads us to be kind of disconnected from the Nature.
Its tricky. As kids we are not really encouraged to follow our dreams and nobody shows us how to go the first steps. So most of our dreams stay “wishful thinking” as we don’t know how to move forward.
Renee´s last blog ..Definition Of Motivation
I have always had vivid dreams and I still remember as a 3 year old dreaming I could fly although my landings were bad enough to make me jump bolt upright in bed , I had that same dream until I was an adult and put it down to constant smacks behind the ear from my teachers with a large hard covered book for day dreaming in class and conditioning . Thank god the education system has advanced and my kids get to learn in an environment that’s far more tolerant , although it isn’t the case in many societies even now. I’m sure I’ve heard or read ” dreams are the mother of all invention’ .
Its true dreaming is somewhat discouraged in the general community.
As soon as you say to someone you were dream about something, peoples eyes tend to roll.
I prefer to say that I had a Vision, rather than a dream. It essentially the same thing, and it sounds much more exciting. Others are much more inclined to listen as well.

I remember reading a book called ‘Dream It Do It” and although there are a few stages in between the do and the dream, it is so important to listen to those stirrings of desire to be, do , or have. Everything has been created by a desire.
The world needs dreamers, otherwise who would paint beautiful paintings, write songs and play music, make movies and perform in theaters, build cities, countries, create flying machines, cures for disease, etc, etc
Long live the dreamer, and thank goodness for the dreamer who created the internet.

Hi Elly,
I agree, Elly. I think we are all dreamers at heart but maybe we’re not all doers. If we don’t take action on our dreams; that’s all that they remain; dreams, wishes and hopes.
So, I agree; long live the dreamers but lets start living our dreams and breathing life into them.

Only uneducated parents will stop their children from dreaming. Are you an educated parent or a rich parent?
A fantastic book that outlines exactly how the education system and well meaning parents inhibit the child’s potential, and ultimately their success, is Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki.
I do have a passion for steering my kids in the right direction and teaching them to think outside the square.
What is going to create abundance for them may not have even been invented yet. They may be the ones to invent it.
