When you’re caught in the hustle and bustle of your life, it’s easy to forget what you were doing. If the phone rings while you are helping your child with their spelling homework, coming back to your child and their place is not always simple. In the case of bigger dreams and tasks, you need to make sure you are surrounding yourself with reminders of what you want to do and how you want to do it. That way, no matter what distractions you have, you will be able to come back to what really matters.
One of the easiest ways to remind yourself of where your dreams are is to write out a list of the things you want. You can do this on a piece of paper or type it out on a computer – that part doesn’t matter. What does matter is that you make sure you are writing down the things you want and reading them regularly. Keep a copy in your wallet or purse as well as on your bathroom mirror at home. The more you etch these goals into your head, the more you will come back to them and work on them. Your personal success will depend on how often you review these goals.
Visual Reminders
Others like to surround themselves with visual reminders of what they want. If you wanted to go to Hawaii, for example, you might find pictures of the beaches to post around your office or your home. This way, you will be reminded of this special trip and how much you want to take it. Communicate this to yourself often. This will activate your brain to be thinking about it all the time, even when you’re not aware you are.
Finally, make sure to tell people you trust about your dreams so that they will ask you about your progress. These questions serve as more reminders about what you want to do and how close you are to doing it.
Have a most outstanding day

I agree that it is important to constantly remind ourselves of what our goals are and where we are headed. Otherwise, like a ship without a rudder, we may just drift along where the winds of circumstance take us.
Having a reminder helps me to not only keep thinking about my goals, but encourages me to keep striving towards them and creates a real purpose in life. Otherwise, like you say, it is easy to forget where we are going given the pace of modern life. It is also a great opportunity to recommit ourselves to our goals whenever we see that reminder.
I definitely like the idea of sharing goals – it sure helps when people ask about how things are going, not only to motivate further, but also to keep oneself accountable.

Hi Sean,
I love lists. I have them for everything. I have them for what I want to achieve that day, that week, that month etc. I have written goals where I can see them. I even have them in a ziplock bag stuck to the tiles in my shower. I have mind maps and pictures.
These things give me comfort because it allows me to track my progress. I can clearly see if I’m staying on track or falling off the wagon.
I also love to visit the things I desire in real life. I love car yards, open houses, travel expos etc. I visualize myself living in this house and driving this car; traveling to this country. It helps me to bring my desires to life.
Tom and Jazz are really switched on people. I also write things down but then forget where I put them. I get chastised for being messy if I put things up on the walls or on my desk. So rather than that I take time out regularly and sit in a quiet place to muse upon life. During these recluse sessions I will remind myself of my goals and review my progress toward those goals. Having done that I will then often meditate for 20 minutes or so after which I feel calm and energised. It works for me.
That reminds me of the story of Jim Carrey. Before he had his first big role, he used to keep a cheque that he made out to himself under his pillow. It was made out for $10 million. Every night before he went to sleep he would pull the cheque out and read what it said. 2 years after starting this he starred in The Mask. What was his payment for this role? $10 million!

Hi Wal,
That is such a great story and another idea I can put to good use. It just goes to show that these techniques work and while visitors to my house think I’m crazy, I love it.
That really is a great story about Jim Carrey, Wal. Mind if I use it?

Visual reminders is something that I have started to use and it has been beneficial to keep my “eye on the prize” as they say. OK, so I may not achieve the million dollar beach house, Ferrari or boat. However they are my visual reminders and if they help me to reach half of my wants I will be more than happy.

I’m all for visual aids.
I’m in the process of getting my Credit Cards under control. I’ve just recently got back on track with the budget, and now I’ve just scanned my two credit cards and will be dividing up the prints into squares that I will put a cross into when I make payment to the value of each square. A simple, yet effective, motivational tool. And at the end when the card is paid off, I’ll have a symbolic burning of my card, as well as the pleasure of chopping up the real one!
Cheers,
Pete

Hi Sean
Thank you for your wonderful aritcle “Surround Yourself with Reminders”, to remind me to do exactly that.
I have my vision poster, I have my weekly and monthly timetables and I have my yearly goals.
Your idea of having ‘Visual Reminders’ and sticking them around the office and home is a great idea. Thank you. I will go and get very creative with that idea.
In large bold print in a place where your eyes will often cross it! For dreams and goals and the chores that will make them come true.
Hi Sean,
I totally love writing checklists & enjoy watching them get disappear as I cross each task of the list. These visual reminders help me keep in touch with what I want to achieve & is especially helpful when I am having a forgetful day : )
