Do You Have the Time for Your Goals?

by Sean Rasmussen on December 28, 2007

We all wish there were more hours in the day for our plans for success. If only we had two, three, five more hours to utilize, THEN we’d be well on our way to living the life we’ve always imagined. But since so many successful people seem to be living within this narrow twenty-four hour day construct, perhaps it’s a matter of setting aside time rather than finding more of it. Here’s a plan to begin making time for your own dreams.

Find the Time

When you want to do something, you make the time to do it. Whether this is the new movie you want to see or the friend that’s only in town for the night, we can always make time for what we really want. More often than not, this ability is somehow lost when it comes to things we really want for ourselves. To help you regain control over your time, try to set aside just thirty minutes each day to thinking about and working on your specific goals. It can be in the morning before everyone else gets up or perhaps late at night when everyone has gone to bed. Just set aside this time for your dreams.

What to Do With the Time You Have

This time can be used for anything: planning, visualizing, etc. Whatever helps you focus more on your dreams and putting your plans for success into action, that’s what this time can be used to achieve. You might want to look over your business plan during this time if you want to open up your own business. If you’re looking to lose weight, you can use this time to think about what you will eat for the day. And if you’re only in the ‘dreaming’ stages of your goals, you can simply look over the list of things that you want and then brainstorm ways to get them.

By specifically putting time aside for your dreams and your goals, you will create more success in your life. Because you are making your dreams a priority, you will not only create the motivation you need, but also the mindset that your dreams are indeed important parts of your life – even if they haven’t come true. Yet.

Now, I’m taking the time to go away for 5 days on a house boat with my wife and 2 sons. I’ll throw a few posts on here if I remember to bring the laptop.

Have a most outstanding day

I agree that it is very important to make time for one’s goals. It is all well and good to set goals, but I find that unless I start working towards those goals, then they will never be achieved. So rather than thinking of goals being a big list of things I might like do someday, my aim is to make sure that when I set goals I also make a commitment to working towards them.

A necessary part in setting my goals is to consider how important a particular goal is to me, and how it ranks along side the other things I do on a daily basis and the other goals I have made. If something isn’t important enough to me to make time for, then it isn’t really worth having on my list of goals. My goals need to be worth making time for, and prioritising over other things I could be doing.

I am not that keen on New Year’s resolutions for this reason. Sure it provides a useful prompt to set goals and re-evaluate them, but unless I am sufficiently motivated to start working towards the goals in December, then why should January be any different? What I did last year, that I found really effective, was to set my New Year’s goals in early December and take action on them in December, so that by the time NYE rolled around, I not only had goals, but I had started to make them real. I think I’ll do the same this year.

This is a great way to structure things Tom.

While it is important to make a list of goals and actions to achieve them, with our lives being so busy as it is and with the likelihood that it will only continue to get busier we need to prioritize the actions that we take. Some will go after the ‘low hanging fruit’ as they say; actions that will give the most benefit for the least effort and others will go for the other end of the spectrum.

The important thing is to take it one step at a time and continue to hit our targets.

It seems that all the motivation experts have something for me to do first thing in the morning. Exercise gurus want me to jog, marketers want me to read books on marketing, Yang wants me to use the BMT. What works for me is to do something towards achieving the latest goals in my journal.

And Wal… you left out one important guru – The Humour Guru. You’ll need to make time to laugh. And I know you have time to laugh.

Hi Sean,

When you have a lot of demands on your time because of family, work, friends etc, it can be really difficult to set aside some time for what you want. I think that it comes down to your hierarchy of values. What you really value is where you will spend your time.

I think that there will always be some kind of negotiating between people and activities but I think we need to find the time to go after our goals. Something will always need to be sacrificed.

I just think it comes down to your priorities. For me, instead of having drinks with the girls every Friday night, I could skip the occasional one or I could go for a couple of hours only. Either choice would probably make me a lot more productive Saturday morning. :)

It’s all about choices and what motivates us all to utulise the time we have everyday. I just wish that my mind could keep up with the time I use to put into my goals. I seem to run out of time & I feel that I haven’t done enough.

The flow of creativity goes up & down… and I think the mistake I have been making is sticking at it (writing) waiting for further inspiration to come to me or I get writers block, so when I run out of time I get frustrated & rouse on myself that i should have done more.

Certainly is something I need to fine tune & find a strategy around!

Hi Sam,

When you get writer’s block, have you ever just stopped and tried doing something physical and seeing if that helps? I know it sounds crazy but whenever I’m stuck, I just go workout or put on some music and just dance. Then, I usually find the answer I’m looking for. For me, there’s something about the combination between doing something physical and finding the answers I need. Hope this helps. :)

Thanks Jazz,

Never thought about doing that. But I love crazy so you can throw as much crazy my way as possible.

I know once I did stop & went for a run but I felt exhausted afterwoods & felt guilty about the time I spent away from writing. Silly? Probable even sillier sticking at it when the flow aint a flowin’! But I think I’ll take up your advice & put some music on & just allow myself to immerse into something else to change state for maybe 15 minutes of loungeroom dancing!!!

I’m with both of you, Jazz and Sam. Sometimes we focus too hard – I remember the story I used to tell about throwing the last dart of the night and without even looking at the dartboard, inevitably it was a bulls-eye. Heh, heh, I used to use that as an excuse for my procrastination too, until I became a mother. Then commonsense prevailed.

Hi Sean,

This reminds me of every time I hear someone say ‘I just don’t have the time’ which is sometimes true but it really becomes quite obvious as to what is really going on when that same person tells you about some trivial soap episode that they had been watching on tv. Prioritizing your goals is so important & is something that I intend on working on to achieve success for my life : )
