Selling Grandma On eBay

Today I’m posting a slightly different type of story: Selling Grandma On eBay. Normally the topics in here are about Mindset, Personal Development and my passion: Internet Marketing. However, I’d like to share another type of story today. Some people think that just because I have experienced considerable success as an Australian Internet Marketer, that I have no problems and life is always “hunky dory”. Well, let me tell you that is not always the case.

Selling Grandma On eBayMore money sometimes just means bigger problems πŸ˜‰

Why: Selling Grandma On eBay?

The title: Selling Grandma On eBay, is inspired by the ilk of some entrepreneurs I have had the pleasure (??) to meet and deal with over the years. I have no doubt in my mind that the Scarcity Mentality that they have around life, although they say they have an Abundance Mentality, is 100% focused on Money & Self Gratification.

Normally I go back over my articles in this blog and edit them prior to publishing. Today however, I want to capture the pure raw emotion behind my experiences so you can feel the real story. To hear that I also get to deal with the same issues as everyone else may just help more people realise how close we all are. We go through highs and lows in life. The lows are speedhumps on our constant journey in life and learning to cope with them helps us “Help Ourselves” as well as “Help Others”.

Do Anything It Takes

I sincerely believe that at least 2 entrepreneurs I have met and done business with would be “Selling Their Grandma On eBay” if they got the right price. It is a pretty big statement, and I’m ashamed to think that any Australian would be like that but after spending years around entrepreneurs like that, you get to know them on a different level. This is in no way meant to take away credit from the good people and entrepreneurs I have met and become very good friends with. By no means! There are many great business people out there and I am proud to call them my friends and sometimes colleagues. Take away the “one or two” bad ones that stain the industry and we have a 100% clean business and we can honestly say we are all dealing from Honesty and Integrity all of the time.

Time Weeds Out The Bad Seeds

Poor old Grandma doesn’t choose her Grandchildren. I would absolutely hate to see my children or Grandchildren behave in that manner. Fortunately, I understand the importance of bringing up my family with honesty, integrity and ethics to the degree that they in turn do the same for their children. It is with great confidence I say that my children’s children will not be putting me up for auction on eBay (Hopefully that is not because I’ll be a Grandpa).

Who’s Selling Grandma On eBay?

My advice to everyone reading this article is this: Go with your gut instinct. If you think someone is so low that they will be Selling Grandma on eBay, then stay away. When I realised that my personal good nature, trust in others, honesty and integrity was being taken advantage of, then I simply moved away from these people. If I was to make a very harsh statement (actually, I’m about to) and if I was a religious person, then I feel this statement sums those predators like this:

“There is boxed seat in a corporate box in Hell. It has their name on it as a sponsor. Enjoy the ride!”

Yes that is harsh, but not as harsh as the people that had to pay for their ride to that corporate box. I have sponsored that ride to the tune of over $300,000 of unpaid work and while I have worn that, I accept the outcome and move on. Hopefully this article will help others stay away from the same mistakes. As a keen promoter of Australian Internet Marketing who intends on being the number 1 in AustralAsia by 2010, I know my knowledge, my honesty, integrity, ethics and love for other people will shine through. I am helping people realise their dreams right now and will keep doing it.

Keeping Positive In Adversity

During, what could be seen as tough times, I still maintain my monthly payment to the charities I support. I refuse to stoop myself to the level of those “few” entrepreneurs that have nothing but themselves at heart. I support these charities and hope that I can inspire you to support a few favorite charities yourself:

In addition to these, I occasionally support the local Soup Kitchen and donated $10,000 to the Red Cross Victorian Bushfire Appeal a few days after the disaster struck.

In summary: Life is good. Please don’t think I’m doing it tough. The purpose of this article is for you to see that things don’t alway turn out the way we want them to. In life we have to take a few hard knocks to the chin and then move on. Stooping ourselves to the level of the dirty play of “some” others is just not acceptable. Karma has a way of sorting those players out. 3 entrepreneurs have lost an Australian Internet Marketer that made the difference between them being super successful in their sales department – or not. They chose “Not“. Good luck for you and me – Bad luck for them.

Now, let’s move on to better things. I hope my message today had some level of Success Communicated in it. I will see you back here soon with my normal writing style back on track for your enjoyment.

Life is good. Let’s play good πŸ™‚

  2. Of my gosh Sean that is harsh and straight from the gut. I hope that who this is directed to gets your message loud and clear.
I have personally meet you Sean and I have to stay that you are only one of the honest ones that I have come across.
Our family “The Wood Family” attend a lot of Conferences over the last three years, with attending those conferences you soon get to see who are the good ones and feel a bad vibe from the others that do not seem honest or have ethics.
Since we have meet you Sean, we know which one you are. You are full of honesty, ethics and down to earth to boot.
After meeting you for the very first time, both my husband David and I picked up a great vibe from you straight away and was pleased to see that there are some good guys still left out there helping us everyday Australians to make it here on the Internet.
I am so looking forward to continuing with your blogs, and following where your life heads next.
To those two that crossed you, what fools because Sean is the real deal.
If this sounds to honest for you, sorry but I am replying as honest as possible.
    Sean Rasmussen you rock:)

    • G’day Lisa,
It’s now March 31st 2010, and I’ve just read Sean’s latest Bushy End Of the Pineapple Article. I agree with you 100 % about Sean, and the wonderful ethical vibe I got from him. I met him at a seminar with one of the bad guys he mentioned in the Pineapple article and was very impressed with his demeanor, but found the other guy with a similar name, to be revolting, sneaky and made my skin crawl. Glad to hear you thought Sean was cool.
      Cheers

  3. Wow !!
Sean this post absolutely ooozes with emotion & as I know and follow you I can read where you are coming from mate. I am 58 yrs old and have experienced very similar circumstances in the past that made me quite bitter towards the world and other folks until the day I met you. Just as your emotions ooze here, your integrity, kindness & feelings for others were felt by me on that day & I knew then I could and still do trust you wholeheartedly. Your Ethics are some thing you should be proud of as very few people have the standard of ethics you do Sean.
My life has been touched and changed in a most magnificent way since meeting you just 2 yrs ago, Sean you taught me to forgive and forget my past and to move on in life and focus on all the positives and beautiful people that are out there, you have also taught me that I can have anything I want in life & how to decide the price to pay. Now you are coaching me towards my Goals that are beginning to take shape in such a way, I can smell the day I never have to work physically again or ever worry about money.
For all of the above Sean , I want to take this opportunity to thank you for all you have done and for what you are currently doing from the bottom of the Old Fisherman’s heart. You are a true champion my friend and more people need to be exposed to your teachings.

    Hey……..Life Is Good……..

  4. Hi Sean,
I have to say that I am in total agreement with you on matters of this nature. I also have meet you at a seminar on the Gold Coast earlier this year and I also got the feeling of honesty and integrity from you as I obsered you during that weekend. I have always tried to follow these ideals myself, and I agree that everything in life tends to go in “circles” and with those that exhibit the qualities of honesty and integrity the “circle” always matches up at the end of the cycle. Not so for those who choose the unethical path.
Nice to hear your thoughts and the inspired comments of those before me today.
    Best Regards,
    Mel Peatey.

  5. WOW Sean, whoever they are, they are not worth it. I know your ethics and integrity are of very high standards and in my eyes, you ARE the number 1 Aussie Internet Marketer in AustralAsia… 2010 isn’t that far away, lol. You have certainly opened doors to opportunities that I never thought possible and for that I will always be grateful.

    Thank You for being YOU!

Sean, I am really glad to have read this from you. It just confirms my gut feeling. Well said. I also have had business dealings with people I trusted only to be well and truly let down. I am only just getting into this area of internet marketing, but have already come across one or two all singing all dancing marketers who are only interested in selling you there products/systems, some of which are obviously unethical. I am really looking forward to the opportunity of getting started under your wing.

I agree with FISHERMAN…life really is good!

  8. Thanks for your honesty Sean. Since first meeting you at the recent Brisbane seminar, I have read your Blogs and have enjoyed their positive and conscious nature. But I also feel that for you to write this post with such raw emotion doesn’t take away from your usual positive nature, but makes your usual posts more accessible to the average person because we can see that you’re genuine, down to earth and real. (And if I’m honest, I think you have been fairly easy on the people you’re referring to…it would be easy to be far more brutal after an experience like that). Because of your nature and the way you share with other people, you will be paid in some way by someone for the work you have done – karma rocks that way.

  9. Sean,

Not so long ago we used to feel comfortable leaving our windows & doors open when we went out anywhere. We could even leave the keys in the ignition of the car without a worry. Then one day our home was broken into. It had a horrible impact on my families life.

It wasn’t so much the possessions, it was the betrayal that hurt the most.

Unfortunately, their are some people who see those open doors as an opportunity to walk straight in & take whatever they like.

Whilst these people enjoy living off stolen goods, you have to explain to your family that somehow it was our fault & maybe we should have been more careful to lock everything away.

I hate having to tell my kids to be careful of these types of people. It’s Un-Australian.

Great post Sean. I feel so connected to your ethics & values.

    Cheers Mate.

PS. Take strength from the fact that there are sooooooo many great people out there who feel the same way about these scamming entreprenuers, that with the transparency of the internet they will be found out.

  10. Wow, there are a lot of emotions in this post Sean. Whatever if it, I sincerely hope that you come out of it a stronger person mate.

You can make a quick buck with unethical tactics, but to build a highly successful and sustainable business requires integrity and high ethics.

Good luck with the future mate, and I will be here waiting for 2010 to see you become the #1 Internet Marketer in Australasia..

Great post, but if you’ve only met two marketers who would sell their grandmother on ebay, then perhaps you should get out more! If only I could list them without being up for a legal suit I would be happy to do so.

Either way, you’re right. Honesty, integrity and ethics should be the cornerstone of any business whether it be online or offline. People sometimes forget that they only have one name and once it is tarnished it’s extremely difficult to get the shine back. This is even more applicable online than offline as bloggers create the news of the moment, as does Twitter, and bad news travels extremely fast..

  18. Hi Sean… Wow, is this a coincidence or what??!! I would like to share in this comment, that last night I wrote a post in my blog, topic about ‘Honesty’ …..And since I read your blog and emails regularly, since I attended the Smart Online Profit Systems seminar here in Melbourne back in late march…….. I just came across this post, and let me tell you, that you are one of a kind Sean, you practically walk the talk, and what I mean by that, is that the ethics, honesty, integrity and encouragement that you show in your character, is of a true leader. I’m currently experiencing that speedhump that you mention and hitting a real low, specially when it comes to money. I too have being a victim of a scum, even thou I’m trying hard to not think or feel the victim….instead think of it as bad business decision, that I can only learn from it…… the worst part is that, when you put everything from your part, in trust, and faith and kind of some sore of expectation from such business dealings you find yourself hopeless, I supposed the waiting game can take a long time……anyway, and what frustrates me the most is that I could be using a certain amount of this money to join you and Shaun in the “Smart Online Profit Systems” because I thought you guys rock!! and maybe speed up the learning curve in this internet marketing path, you see I’m totally new to this field and I’m currently teaching my self different strategies, which I don’t mind taking baby steps, mind set is very important, and by me joining a mentoring group I’m sure I would learn faster, and for that there is a price to pay, like anything in life. Right now I’m in a stage where I would like to make things happen, but I know that only in time, what I’m thinking now, will transform and reveal it self, maybe when I least expect it. I got a young family, and saying that, it gives me more then a reason and desire to move on and keep on working at it, my current goal is to quit my day job within 5 years… Also I like how you mention, Karma will sore this kind of people out….. and when you feel the most at grief…. you think of this universal law of Karma, you kind of feel a lot better… πŸ™‚

  23. You’ve said that people get what they give. That is in accordance with the Law of Attraction. Whatever it is that you’ve experienced with these people, however bad the situation may have been, it was good that you were able to pick yourself up and stand on the right foot. These people do these actions because they come from a place of lack. I salute you for having the integrity in these times of deception and treachery, not to mention, in the business field.

  24. Phil Browne [stix] says:

Hi Sean People like these and I call the term people very loosely are not worth worrying about they will eventually come to grief as they always do.I believe that if you treat your fellow humans in a way as they have with you that KARMA will take control of the situation and fix the problem.Over the years I have trusted certain people only to be for want of a better word ripped off.Im currently the butt of everyones jokes things being said like what are you going to try next to make some money.Just the other day a friend of mine said he would give me a 100 percent for trying. One thing that sticks in my mind is a person said that I was to stupid to make things work.To them I say thank you for giving me more reasons if thats possible to go forward with my dreams to become free from burdon of not having quite enough money for those little extra things that we would like.Because of the finances I had to stop [briefly] sponsoring the child we had with world vision this broke my heart but it is a priority once we are up and running again. My dream now is to sponsor a whole village wouldnt that be great.I look forward now with the help that yourself Sean and the rest of the 21st century team have given me to achieve my dreams and helping a lot more underpriviliged people. And to those who doubt watch out here I come I cant wait to see the look on their faces Thanks guys phil

  25. When you put your trust in people the majority will return that trust to you,but no matter what path we tread in life there will always be someone working against us. When that happens it strengthens our resolve to forge ahead with our endeavours and leave that destructive element behind to wallow in their misery. There is goodness in abundance in this life and that gives us strength to overcome the dissapointments that we encounter along the way. I am not sure that wisdom only comes with age, because for a young man Sean, you have plenty of it.

    all the best
    Rob.

  26. Barry Heal says:

Sean, thanks for your post, this is only one of the many reasons why I follow you. I truly believe some people need to look in the mirror an ask themselves what the word “Ethics” means.

    Thanks for such great post.

  27. Hi Sean,

Successful people are good at making decisions and sticking to them. You have made a decision that sees you move past those who have different standards for whatever reason (they are yet to learn their own hard lessons). We can only hope that people who do want to “sell their grandmothers’ on ebay” learn some lessons as a result of your decision. How you and others approach and work with, or choose not to approach and work with, these people will also determine an outcome for them that eventually will not be favourable.

Whatever money you have lost, I am sure you will make it tenfold anyway so keep up the great work Sean.

I think most of us have a story of being ripped off and that experience lives with us but it is the lesson we learn from it that makes us stronger and strengthens our gut instincts for future dealings with others.

On a funny note, you could always visualise them having their car broken down and stuck in the rain in the middle of a country track with no cash, food or transport in sight and the nearest town being 50km away. I am sure you are aware of a few “tracks” from your travels that you could use as the landscape in your visualisations?? I guess also if you wanted to be a little nice then you could make sure they had a water bottle. πŸ™‚

I too have had some past experience which have left me with a bitter taste in my mouth.

However, I thank you for inspiring me to let go and move on.

As I read your articles, I am grateful to you for inspiring me along my journey of becoming hopefully a successful internet marketer.

    Thank you and cheers.

  30. I am baffled by reading this post and your raw emotions abundantly exposed and at the same time realise that there’s even more to it and that you’re holding back (for legal reasons I understand and because karma will have its way..) It is clear that you are rising above and for that I admire you immensely. As everybody here have said so well, anyone who have met you would know about the genuine ethics and honesty in your work and that would apply whatever you would take on in life. That is something people either have or not in my opinion.

Also, I think it’s great for people like you to be around and show our young ones what is decent and that it exists in this world, so that the “baddies'” ways don’t rubb off to our next generation. I can distinguish between what’s “dodgy” and what’s not (in the long run anyway), but young people may not always and need good examples to go by.

Finally, I really hope I am not dealing with those same people as you describe here, ever, as I would be equally upset for not having seen it.

Sean, keep rocking and we are all on your side!

    Cheers Bita

  31. Hi Bita (and everyone else who have commented)
Yes, there are things a cannot write. As I put it in a comment to some friends recently:

“We cannot name these people, else they get upset that they are exposed for what they have openly done and should be held accountable for”

I have recently received a legal threat by an individual that basically said: “If you expose me (for what I have done), I will take you down”. The ‘brackets’ contain what was meant in the message.

The law protects those with most money and sometimes the ones that least deserve it. We simply need to move on and find a way to make this work for us.

And yes; Life Is Good! πŸ™‚

  32. Wow what a story Sean, lets hope that this doesn’t happen a second time lesson well learn’t and well noted on my side. Thanks for a great post. Keep well.

  33. This is a good approach to analyzing an internet marketer’s pitch and website. If you read his or her’s copy and feel they are that type who would put grandma up for sale then are they really going to deliver what they promise.

  35. Sean, I’m glad you wrote this. There’s always room for constructive, well-placed anger. What’s that expression? Sometimes a good defence is a good offencive argument.. or something like that. Again, you standing up for principles that go far beyond any personal emotional reaction. Good for you!

  36. Thankfully eBay rules prohibit selling grandma. Adult material and Human Parts & Remains are specifically not allowed. ( http://pages.ebay.com.au/help/policies/items-ov.html )

Back to being serious Sean; yes I know what you mean. In my quest to find out more about online marketing I have been bombarded by numerous autoresponder lists and the claims they make are incredible. There is no way they would be allowed to publish them in the regulated media. Anything for a quick buck those cowboys.

Glad to see you beleive in karma too.

  37. Hi Sean,

Selling grandma on eBay… reminds me of another description I heard a long while ago, about a woman, during my time involved in politics. A woman speaking about the another woman who had shown to be rather unscrupulous: said, “She would stomp on her Grandmother’s head with stiletto heels and grind it in if she stood in her way to being elected”

    That’s pretty mean, ah? Anyway……..

Sean, are you sure you have no legal claim to get the money owed to you, and with interest ? Why couldn’t you lodge a claim in the “small debts” court? Represent yourself, no need to use a lawyer for this sort of thing. Just lodge the claim yourself. Most magistrates are sympathetic to claimants in this respect because they see so many going through. It’s just a thought.

Anyway, you have moved on so I won’t say much. I think though, you may benefit from an UPMART Common Law Course (UCLC) by Mr McClure. We could book you in for the next one he holds in Perth. I’m sure he has a process on how to get money owed, and quick smart. It starts by writing a notice and take it from there. Let me know if you want to know more about doing a UCLC.

  38. Jazz Salinger says:

    Hi Sean,

It’s always really hard when someone breaks your trust; especially when it’s someone that you considered a friend. Still, I believe in karma and one day, they will get what is coming to them. And with the advent of social media, it will be sooner than they think.

Also, it can be hard to choose the right Internet Marketing mentor to learn from in the beginning. When you’re new to this business, it can be hard to know if you’ve picked the right person. It doesn’t take long though before they show their true colors.

I have know you for some months now and I’m sure of your honesty and integrity. You always surpass my expectations.

  39. I can honestly say I’ve never personally met anyone who I believe would “sell grandma on ebay”. But if there are beautiful, good-hearted internet marketers around, then of course (with contrast and polarity in our universe) there would be others who would do anything for a buck, or a lot of bucks.

It sucks (big time) to get mixed up with these people, but the truth is, they exist. It’s about identifying them early on and dealing with the situation appropriately.

I speak from personal experience too. I didn’t lose $300,000 but I lost enough – that would make most people very angry – to a scam, of all things. It’s a real challenge and life lesson to go through something like that. As much as it hurt me at the time, I know it happened for a reason and I know the lessons I needed to get from that experience.

    • I have met 3 people in the past 5 years that I sinserely believe would put a price on their relatives. I have, in a way, been blessed to meet these ‘beings of lesser values’ as it has strenghtened my resolve to help those that really deserve help. All 3 were entrepreneurs, all were (are) Aussies and all met (meet) the criteria I was warned against my whole life. Being a citizen of a ‘do-gooder’ society that protects these kind of people, I cannot name them to protect others. The law doesn’t like the truth sometimes πŸ˜‰

      • Hi Sean,
This is where the law is an ass, it is these days there to protect the bad guy, not the the good people I know how you feel but what can you do but go on know that they will never have true happiness and they will in the end pay for their deeds

  40. Hi Sean,
thanks for sharing that story – it reminds me to stay alert and make sure I am doing the right thing by me and others. It’s good to hear that it was only 3 out of the hundreds of people you probably dealt with over the last 5 years, but it’s still sad that there are people out there thinking that this is a way to go. I don’t want to know what they teach their children ….
I think the best weapon against it is to make sure everybody is aware that there are still shady figures out there and get as many people as possible to understand and practice the law of attraction. The more people are out there that work with integrity the less the shady characters stand a chance.

It still amazes me that those 3 people that are not honest and above board could sleep at night, and still hold their head up high to Australia (to the world). I would be too disappointed in myself if I had behaved that way. I know that I would not like to be a part of their circle of friends, nor be in their business world.

  43. Boo-yeah! When these things happen to you the best thing is to express it in a positive way – and even give it an edge that will, when at the end attaches a different emotion to it. From something negative you have created a post that has had a positive effect.

That’s exactly my new philosophy. Karma – too right mate! I hear you – I went through a similar experience last year (in a work situation). This guy would also sell his Grandma to the highest bidder, except with one major difference – if the highest bidder on Ebay didn’t meet his high expectations, he would simply re-list it, or find a way to split it so he could MORE money.

  44. I’m in awe that you donate so much to those in need and yet I’m not surprised. It’s those who give back and those who value what they have that are the best leaders. I continually donate a portion of my earnings to causes I believe in and feel so good for doing so. I know that some day I’ll be posting about a $10 000 donation to a literacy foundation – not for the bragging rights but as a thank you for those who supported me enough to be able to support the foundations I believe in.

  45. The Buddha said “Everyone has 83 problems”.

In Matthew 18:21-22, we read, Then Peter came to him and asked, β€œLord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”
β€œNo!” Jesus replied, β€œseventy times seven!”

    • Wow – 83, is that all? Then it seems I’ve faced everyone one of those this morning. On the positive note – if that’s all of them I won’t see any more issues today.

I will forgive for seventy times seven but I will never, can never forget. Sometimes I wish I could forget and start each day anew. New relationships, second chances without all the history, a new beginning…

  46. Very nice topic you selected to write. This is going for long time. I think this is cheap idea to make money πŸ˜†

  47. Selling your Grandma on ebay… great heading.

Reading through all of the comments and based on your article, it’s obvious you have ethics.
    What a shame people can’t be named… wouldn’t that make a difference.
Even in New Zealand, we have “sellouts”… sometimes, nothing is sacred.

We all like to think that Karma will have its day
