Mindset Mastery 2 – Who Was Napoleon Hill?

by Sean Rasmussen on April 28, 2008

Mindset Mastery EBookKnowing the background of an accomplished empowerment and wealth creation teacher like Napoleon Hill lends his teachings a high dose of credibility. It appears to be a notable fact that many, if not most, inspiring self improvement authors started life with some sort of hardship. Rarely do we see someone born with abundance of worldly possessions and material wealth become a highly inspiring and well known motivational author.

Napoleon Hill

Napoleon Hill was born in the late 1800’s (1883-1970) and lived a long and successful life during which he proved that mastering your mind does certainly lead to success and wealth. Mr. Hill is another prime example of a man born into a modest family, who came to be famous beyond his own lifetime, and ultimately a contemporary of great wealthy and powerful men like Andrew Carnegie, Thomas Edison, and President Franklin Roosevelt.

Napoleon Hill started life poor. He was born in a two-room cabin in rural Virginia. His mother died when he was a boy. Hill began writing at the tender age of 13 for a mountain newspaper and worked his way to success, fame, and prosperity from there. His early career as a newspaper reporter put him in contact with the famed steel magnate Andrew Carnegie, who prompted Hill to study the lives of successful and wealthy men to find the secret to their success, so that he could share it with others.

Think and Grow Rich

This was the impetus behind Think and Grow Rich. The book is based on research gathered from interviews with more than 500 wealthy men; from those interviews, Hill gleaned 13 principles shared by all rich men and women, principles he outlines in order to teach readers the secret to wealth creation. The book went on to become Hill’s best known work, and is valued here at Universal Wealth Creation as one of the most useful resources for people seeking to master the keys to wealth creation, and live better by doing so.

I will see you back here Monday and Thursday every week for the continuation of the Mindset Mastery series.

It’s great to have another example of success due to your own merits. And even better, Napoleon Hill is a teacher who shows all of us (if we are interested) how we can shape our life and become successful through our own power.

Sean, you have done a great job in making his work accessible in a modern way and introducing it to thousands of people – Thanks!

Napoleon Hill has left this amazing legacy for anyone who wants to learn to develop the right mindset to create the life of their dreams. But, we are also fortunate that there are men like you who are willing to take these lessons and mentor those of us who are dedicated to improving our lives.

Hi Sean,

I have read the book Think And Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill at least a couple of times and am half way through it again but I still have a question in my mind that I can’t quite pin-point the answer. That is in the introduction of the book titled “A Fifty Cent Lesson In Persistence” My question is, What was the power Napoleon Hill wrote about that Mr Derby witnessed. A power the child accidentally stumbled upon that made her master over her superior”

I don’t believe I have found it in the book yet. How can I find the answer?

Hi Jill I found it in Chapter 1 introduction of Think and Grow Rich in my book it is page 8

Hi Rita,

Thanks for your feedback. Do you mean you understood right away “what strange power that child did use” to conquer her master? And is said to have examples of “this power” throughout the book. Can you name that power, Rita ?

Jill.

Reminds me of that character in the Vicar of Dibley, Nononononononono. The Vicar soon learned that no doesn’t necessarily what it says.

Napoleon living proof that someone who, by tradition, should have lived an average life, can achieve wealth by mastering the principles in this book.

It is an interesting point you make that people born into modest means and who experience great hardship can turn into such incredible achievers. Warren Buffet is another great example.

Makes me wonder why this happens. Perhaps there is something about the initial struggle which crystallises in these individuals and serves as a great motivator in them. Perhaps they just aren’t used to quitting, or perhaps their experiences give them a unique view of the world.

I guess if you have to fight for what you want from an early age it becomes a habit. If then you add self confidence and a dream to it these persons are (in my eyes) more likely to achieve it as they have worked through problems before in their life.

If you get everything (more or less) handed to you and don’t have to fight or work for anything that you really want, this is the habit you will develop. The expectation that you will get what you want without taking action to achieve it. And that won’t work that well anymore when you are by yourself.

Very true, Renee.

Another possibility is that, most of these men had very little education, and they had to learn on the streets, so to speak, and on their feet. But the point I’m making is that because they didn’t have much schooling, they weren’t moulded, conformed and taught to think like everyone else. Thinking outside the box came naturally to them, as a survival skill.

Just a thought!

Cheers,

Pete

I’ve heard that challenges bring out our strengths – and perhaps its easier from that point of view to encounter them earlier. I’m just glad he had the life he did, and made the choices he did, otherwise how could we benefit, and proceed along the path?

Very true Jo.
Even so it’s hard to accept and see the “blessing” at the time you go through a though phase, I think as long as we learn from it and don’t get negative about it we come out stronger and better prepared for life.
How else are you supposed to learn about life? If you are packed in cotton wool all the time to never heart yourself while you are young, you have to learn a lot of things once you are older and everybody expects you to “know” stuff already.

Rarely do we see someone born with abundance of worldly possessions and material wealth become a highly inspiring and well known motivational author. – This is true but why do you think it is?

Do you think born wealth is a key to failure or do you think people born rich are too consumed with money that they don’t make the time to find themselves and their passion?

Thanks Sean

I have been a Napoleon Hill fan from my teenage years (not too long ago!) and my TAGR book is a bit dog eared now.

One of my favourite quotes form Napoleon Hill is ‘ Every adversity, every failure, and every heartache carries with it the Seed of an equivalent or a greater Benefit.”

This quote runs parallel with another “every cloud has a silver lining”

Not enough praise can be dished out on this extraordinary man.

Blessings

Hi Elly,

I love that quote. It says to me that there is value in every experience. Obviously some are so horrific that we can’t see the value in them at the time. But hopefully as we get some distance from it, we’ll see the benefit that wouldn’t have been there without it.

This is also one of my favourite quotes.
