Although Think and Grow Rich may be the writing that Napoleon Hill is most famous for, it was not his first and certainly not his last, either. That book did go on to become one of the world’s all-time best-selling books (selling more than 30-million copies and counting) not only in its genre, but amongst all categories, and it continues to go strong today. The reason is that the message and education offered in Think and Grow Rich is timeless—a message of success and achievement, of making the most of life. It is also a message that is in good company with the rest of the works of Napoleon Hill.
Timeless Lessons From Napoleon Hill
It is virtually impossible to list all of the works of Napoleon Hill. Like most writers, there are many texts that never saw the light of publication day, and also many works that preceded his fame that went without the fanfare and notice of his more important and famous self empowerment works.
Among the first of Hill’s works were countless newspaper articles that he wrote as a “mountain reporter” in Wise County, Virginia, in the United States (the region where Hill was born into virtual poverty). His career as a reporter spanned many years, beginning at the very young age of 13 and continuing on into his early adulthood. Although much of that work has been effectively lost to us today, it did serve set the stage for all of his later works. Had it not been for the reporting assignment that led him to Andrew Carnegie’s door, there would probably be no Think and Grow Rich, or any of Hill’s other treasured works.
As we’ve discussed before, Carnegie encouraged Hill to work to uncover the formula for success that is common among all people of wealth and success. This is the work that later inspired and served as the cornerstone of Think and Grow Rich. But both before and after that book was written, the lessons and information gathered from that experience also birthed other works of Hill’s. The most prominent of those are these following here.
The Many Works Of Napoleon Hill
- Hill’s Golden Rule Magazine.
One of Hill’s first works was Hill’s Golden Rule Magazine, which Napoleon Hill edited and published himself from 1919 to 1920. - The Law Of Success.
The Law of Success was the first work that compiled what Hill learned from his interviews with more than 500 of the world’s most wealthy and successful people. It was originally offered as a home-study course in 1928. The course was also offered through a 17-volume course known as the “Mental Dynamite” series through 1941, but the outbreak of World War II put an end to the series for that time. - The Magic Ladder to Success.
One of Hill’s next inspiring works was The Magic Ladder to Success, published in 1930 (sometimes referred to as simply, The Ladder to Success). This book is considered something of a pre-cursor and condensed version of the success formula that would later grow to become Think and Grow Rich. It details each of the principles of success that Hill deduced. - Think And Grow Rich.
Although we have already talked plenty about it, there is no listing the works of the great Napoleon Hill without including this classic empowerment text published in 1937. Think and Grow Rich, the basis for our own Mindset Mastery series, is an even more elaborate and detailed discussion of the principles of success. The book stops just short of actually telling you what the secret to success is, as Hill believed it was more important for you to learn for yourself after careful study of the book and its major principles.
Further Works By Napoleon Hill
Once Napoleon Hill gained fame and momentum from his early works, and most specifically Think and Grow Rich, he went on to produce several other works that were more targeted for solving specific issues relating to success and personal achievement. If you have read Think and Grow Rich or have followed in our Mindset Mastery series, you will see how many of these volumes grew directly from the chapters and pages of Think and Grow Rich. Some of these later works include:
- How to Sell Your Way Through Life, published in 1939
- The Master Key to Riches, 1945
- How to Raise Your Own Salary, 1953
- Success Through a Positive Mental Attitude, 1959
- You Can Work Your Own Miracles, 1971, published posthumously after Hill’s death in 1970
Think And Grow Rich
Neither of these lists of the works of Napoleon Hill are at all conclusive of his life’s work, although they do include most of the most important works of his life. In addition to his printed works, however, Napoleon Hill also worked in collaboration with other authors such as W. Clement Stone and also delivered many lectures and educational series and presentations.
Napoleon Hill passed away in 1970, but not before leaving a lifetime’s legacy of teachings. The continued popularity of his works prove them to be the timeless, viable, important contributions that they are, helping people by the millions to succeed and live their best lives possible.
Just as Napoleon Hill did, I encourage you to Think And Grow Rich!

Yet another wonderful synopsis of Hill. Well done Sean!. Thank you for the list of his major works as well. Some I have in my library and some I’m yet to track down. Along with Hill’s ‘Think and Grow Rich’ I think that it is important to ‘READ and Grow Rich’ as well!

I first read Think and Grow Rich 40 years ago. It is one of the dozen or so books that most contributed to my success as one of the world leaders in my field of expertise. I can still think of the biggest mistake I made in applying the principles (picking the wrong people in my master mind group), but mistakes are valuable when we learn from them. Also the principles that most contributed to my success as a salary earner (persistence, doing that little bit better than the next person, keeping healthy, positive mental attitude). But passion … my passion was elsewhere, and that is where I truly succeeded.
I hope 2010 brings you lots of delightful surprises.
Thank you Sean, I am sooo grateful and I am feeling really good about 2010 – it’s going to be THE year!!!
Happy New Year and thanks for a wonderful overview and yes, I am thinking!
Thanks for a great article and Happy New Year to you. One of my favorite Napoleon Hill books is Grow Rich with Peace of Mind. It taught me the importance of having balance in all areas of life, not just pursuing money.

What thinking person could fail to be touched with humility after Napoleon Hill”s interview. To know we have the power of control of our thoughts and therefore our own destiny is one thing,to use it quite another.Eternal vigilance of our thoughts is difficult.Enyone got any advice on how to do it?
A true timeless classic!
Hi Sean, it’s interesting to see what else he wrote. You mentioned also that Napoleon Hill also co-authored books – which made me smile because I suddenly remembered my first contact with Napoleon Hill’s books.
After I graduated I got a voucher for a book of my choice, and I picked “Success through a positive mental attitude” (ok, I chose the German translation as my english wasn’t very good at that time). And I remember that my classmates looked very strangely at me because of that choice, but I loved it.

I read Think & Grow Rich around 30 years ago. Although I didn’t go on to have any obvious successes in life as a result, it did start me questioning things more than I would have. I started to question everything and held faith that I could find the truth about stuff if I questioned enough. Out and into 2 careers later, I discovered a path to health I am passionate about. It is so ‘wierd’ that not many would recognise it as containing truth.
It’s funny that now I am revisiting this book to find many similar principles that coincide between gaining perfect health, and understanding/gaining wealth.
