Hi Elly,

I agree that it's not just about persistence. Darby and his Uncle could have kept persisting in the wrong direction completely and that wouldn't have helped them be successful either.

You're right. They gave up without seeking specialist advice on where the fault line could go. It's a tough lesson to learn.

Yes. In this case, you would want to make sure you had all the information before you decided to quit or continue. If you don't have the necessary knowledge to make an educated decision, then you find someone who does. Quitting just because it looks like it's gone bad means you've not truly thought about what you are doing.

About 12 years ago I was partners with the woman who's business I bought this year. We had been working together for almost 2 years and I was starting to realize a small income from my share of the business. It was very small and I reinvested it so as to increase my inventory. Unfortunately about that time my ex-husband decided that I needed to quit the business and get a paycheck job. He had been injured on the job and Worker's Comp was barely keeping us afloat. He had never had faith in me and my business and probably never would. So, I reluctantly did as he said.

The next year my partner's business really took off. Our reputation had grown quickly over that winter and she had so much business that she had to hire people to help her with the sewing. I watched with envy and sadness as she enjoyed what I should have been there for as well.

Now, 12 years later, I am doing it again. This time, it doesn't matter if my spouse believes in me or my business. I believe. (Although my husband of 9 months does believe in me) :D I've spent 12 years yearning for, wanting, thinking about, needing the success and prosperity I knew could be mine. This time, it's going to happen.

Hi Sean

This is one story I have always remembered. Yes, Darby did stop within 3 feet of the mother lode but he gave up because at the time he was ignorant. He had no understanding of fault lines and he failed to get expert advice.

This story is not just illustrating never giving up, but having a solid education and knowledge for the business you want to create and asking for advice or looking at all possibilities before changing a course of action.

It is a warning not to go charging ahead without adequate information and the skills needed for the job.

That's the way I see it anyway... what do you think?

Blessings
Elly

Hey Sean,

While I do understand the need to push through obstacles when they present themselves, and to not give up at the first sign of 'non achievement' (as opposed to failure), but at what point does it stop being passion-driven, burning desire, to blind obsession and almost addiction? Especially with mining, he could have gone on for another mile, with no result, and still pulled up 3 feet short.

I know in my personal life, there have been plenty of times when I've thought to myself, "Just 15 more minutes!" and thought that a few times, until two hours later, I've realised that time was wasted and left with no result.

Just a thought!

Cheers,

Pete

Hi Sean,
It's hard to know when to keep going or when it's time to give up digging. The fact is though, if Darby's Uncle had persistance and a positive mindset he would have been sure that there wasn't anymore gold ore before abandoning the mine.
