Five Minutes to Unlock Your Motivation

by Sean Rasmussen on March 23, 2008

Inspired by a recent review (of this blog) by Stumbleupon legend Bleem-Filk, I’ll jump into a “Five Minute A Day” motivational post.

Got five minutes to spare? Of course you have!

Got five minutes to spare? If you want to achieve your goals, you need a drink of that elusive tonic called: Motivation. To get motivated, you will need about 5 minutes per day to kick it into action. Whether you want to admit it or not, you have five minutes to spare right now. And with those five minutes, you could either choose to sulk about something in your busy lifestyle or you could start getting on the road to success. All it takes is five minutes of willpower to begin pumping up your internal motivation.

Here’s how:

Start by listing the things you want to achieve in your life. These could be big things or little things; Lifestyle, wealth, travel, health, achievements, it doesn’t matter. You can even write them down on slips of paper for the next step. Choose just one of these things and then list the steps it will take in order to achieve that goal. The steps should be super tiny so that you aren’t feeling overwhelmed and ready to give up.

Unlock your motivation

Unlock your motivation in five minutesFor example, if you want to clean your house, you might want to simply start by opening the door of the room that you want to clean. Sounds silly, right? But creating these tiny steps, you will encourage yourself to not only get past the initial hesitation, but also to get started on the things you really want to do. Most people will find that they don’t just want to do the little steps; they also want to do more and before you even know it, you have the room cleaned and you’re ready to start on the next. The initial five minutes of doing this is the key to unlocking your motivational drive to carry on.

Get the momentum happening!

You need to give yourself five minutes to begin the task. You can even get out a timer to make sure you are doing something related to the task within that timeframe. If you want to go longer, that’s fine, but commit to those five minutes. You can easily fit these five minutes into your morning or right before you go to bed. Just fit them into your life somehow.

The rwards of having a motivated lifestyleYou might be surprised at what you can do. You are building up momentum and motivation and from there, you can do anything. The results you will reap from investing these “Five Minute A Day” will return you a handsome dividend in the shape of lifestyle, motivation, happiness and fulfillment.

Have a most outstanding day

Hi Sean!

Frankly, I’m so thankful for reading this post! We really just need the 5 minutes each day to get ourselves motivated to get into action. How often do we set out to perform our action plan and start working towards our goals? Almost hardly, or should I say, procrastination always stands in the way.

I realised that the most difficult part in working towards a goal is not its process but the first step. And frankly, just spending that crucial 5 minutes a day is certainly a great way to motivate ourselves and unlocking our drive to work towards our goals on a daily basis.

Thanks a lot for sharing such a great piece of advice!

Cheers,
Patricia

Hi Billy. Good to see a fellow Twitter user. I hope you do find some momentum. Maybe have a read through the older articles in my blog. They don’t really date as motivation and mindset are topics that just don’t go away. Welcome back!

Hello Patricia. It’s always great to hear positive feedback resulting from a blogpost. I don’t really imagine people getting motivated from them or taking any massive action towards their goals. It does however happen and I’m constantly reminded by the small percentage that take time out and recognize my efforts. Your comment is such an example. It helps motivate me to get more posts in here and get to help more mindset happening! Thanks! :)

You make a really good point about focus and simplicity. After all, if a person doesn’t know what he or she is working toward and why, then motivation will be lower, and its less likely it will happen or be attracted. Your post draws attention to the secret we all have hidden inside ourselves. If we imagine ourselves as an onion, and take steps to peel the layers, then we amaze ourselves with the talents, qualities and abilities we discover inside.

Hi again Liara. Thanks for sharing the “onion” analogy with us :)
It is very true that we have many hidden talents waiting to be uncovered within.

Hi Allen
Thank you. It’s always great to hear feedback about the Mindset Mastery eBook. Being a free download, it makes it easier to distribute to people and that gives me a better chance to help more. There has been lots of great feedback via email about the book inspiring many people. If it helps you, then I know it will help many of your current and future friends. We all have the ability to start our own little “legion” of world improvement, if you like. Spread the word to those who want to be a better person or live in a better place. Those who are ready, will come forth. The rest will stay back until the time is right for them, if ever.
On that note, I’ll go and write a post…

The hardest part is getting started. My motivation comes in 3 packages…not in any particular order, one is 2ft tall, followed by 3ft tall and finally the big man in my life…6ft tall.

Hi Sean,

I love the concept of five minutes a day. It breaks larger goals that may be overwhelming to get started on, into bite size pieces that are easy to do. Each time you complete a small step it’s a step closer to your larger goal.

This helps you to gain confidence and build some momentum. Success breeds success. It helps you develop the habit of winning.

This is very similar to the steps that I followed to build up my goals list.

I listed my major goals (the dreams I have to fulfill) and then worked backwards and listed the steps that I need to take to achieve my major goal.

Every time I complete one of the steps, I mark it off. It’s great to see that physical progress and it energizes you to continue.

I like the idea of targeting a five minute block to help power through the initial steps of tasks which might otherwise get put off.

Now there are certain things which I could do for which 5 minutes would seem like an absolute eternity – like trying to hold my breath under water or sprinting as fast as I can. But I find the things I procrastinate over are nowhere near as demanding as this, even at their worst.

By breaking big tasks things down in to incredibly manageable steps, the pain involved in getting started seems to be much less of a factor. This sounds like a great way to overcome initial inertia. And once I get moving it can be quite easy to keep moving.

K-Mart have really nice timers for about $5. They also have more expensive electronic ones but they don’t work as well as the manual ones. They go to 60 minutes too, just in case you need more than 5 minutes.

Getting tasks down on paper & as a list in order of priority puts it in a visual context & when it’s done there is a sense of accomplishment.

Builds motivation! And 5 minutes a day… EVERYONE has 5 minutes – how easy is that!

And as a community, if we all put in 5 minutes each for a common goal, I wonder what we could achieve…

Thanks for this wake-up call, Sean.
I have been guilty of ’sulking’ quite spectacularly a couple of (for me) notable times in my life. I have also been blessed enough for life to pick me up and carry me along and out of the bog each time. This concept of step by step planning is something I resist often, as I am quite good at instinctive planning, (ego +++++), but the truth is, when I look at the results, and take responsibility for where I am, I have to take my own advice and get back to basics, and double-check myself.
Thank you for pounding this point.

That’s so true. Once I get cleaning I can’t stop – my whole day is spent cleaning and then it’s done for another week or so and I can move on with a clearer mind. When your to do list is full it seems too overwhelming to even know where to start but when you make the 5 minutes and take the time to do it your list will be down to nothing before you realize you’re doing the tasks. Thanks for the boost!

Hey Sean,

I can SOOO relate to this entry! Living by myself and not having a partner or flatmates to motivate (or sometimes it could be ‘nag’) me to get things done, I can have a tendency to let the domestics slide on occasion. And the further I let them slide, the more daunting the task begins to appear and the start seems to get buried in amongst it all.

However, once I build up the motivation, be it self-motivation (“I’ll just put this away, and get that out of the way”) or enforced motivation (“Hell, I’ve got a property inspection in three days time!”), more often than not, the ‘daunting’ task is over and done with in a lot less time than I had built it up in my mind. I’ve never thought to use this as a tool in other aspects of my life. Thanks for the nudge!

Cheers,

Pete

Five minutes a day doesn’t sound like a lot – but added up it amounts to something really big. 5 minutes a day are 1825 minutes in a year – or over 30hrs! And there is a lot you can achieve when you commit more than 30hrs to that one task.

I guess very often we are scared by the immensity of a task and can’t see the tiny steps that will get us there. So thanks for pointing it out, for reminding us that we do have 5minutes to spare every day without a problem.

Hi Renee,

I think sometimes the hardest part is just getting started but everything is easier when it’s broken down into bite size pieces. If you spend five minutes a day on anything; it won’t be long before you’re making serious inroads.

Also, I think it helps build that winning feeling as you feel like you’ve accomplished something.

This sounds a good method..
Always enjoy hearing ideas on motivation, of course the opposite being procrastination, and we all know where that leads.

Its very true once you start something then momentum builds and with it more interest than at the start
An enjoyable article..

Hi Sean

I really enjoyed this article on 5 minutes a day, a good achievable time frame for people to get motivated.

I probably seem a bit odd to people but I have no problem being motivated at all. Every morning when I go walking I do affirmations and gratitude for health, wealth and happiness. It is great in the winter when its dark at 5.30 am and no one can see me but in summer I hope people don’t see this crazy woman talking to herself with emotion and feeling gesturing around the streets!

Every evening I go running and I visualise exactly what my dream life looks, feels and sounds like. Doing this morning and night I have a powerful vision of what I am walking and working towards every day. Now that is motivating!

Hi Elly,

That’s an excellent way to start the day. There’s nothing better than a workout for your mind and body at the same time. Doing it in the morning also sets your attitude for the rest of the day. At least it seems to for me.

G’day Sean,
I love the idea of BABY STEPS ! and also the idea of writing down goals on a daily basis to keep them fresh in the forefront of one’s mind. I have 2 vision boards with pictures and text about all the ” goodies ” I’m aiming for, which I always thought would generate the motivation I needed to achieve. BUT – after a while they become part of the furniture and are not ” seen ” as well as one would expect.

Great idea to do the goals on a daily basis. Thanks for this great positive kick-in-the-bum !

Cheers
