Make Your Life an Adventure

by Sean Rasmussen on April 15, 2008

Making your life an adventureIn this crazy thing we call a life, there are a number of things we feel we should do: get married, have children, buy a house, buy a car, be nice to people, etc. But in the end, the only thing that really matters is how happy you are. To help you begin to make your life a happier event, you need to start looking at it as an adventure – not just a ‘To Do’ list.

Growth – Never stop learning

While you might not want to earn another degree (or your first degree), you should be more than willing to learn new things. Read lots of books about subjects that fascinate you. Take classes and try new things. This way, you are always encouraging growth and stimulating your mind and finding out what YOU like to do.

Lifestyle – Travel

Bora Bora island is lifestyleYou don’t need to go to Bora Bora to be well-traveled and experience lifestyle. Just driving around your local area and seeing what your town has to offer is plenty. Just remove yourself from the norm once in a while. Not only it is fun, but you often come back home more appreciative of what you already have. This develops gratitude and a sense of fulfillment. Seeing something new also makes you feel like you’ve achieved a lot more that day.

Gratitude – Meet new people

Too often we feel that we only need so many friends in order to be a good and fun person. But the more people we meet, the more we can learn about our worlds and how others perceive the world to be. Try meeting new people or at least just talking to strangers to keep things interesting. Develop what I call an Attitude Of Gratitude.

Mindset - Do one thing that scares you

Challenge yourself and build mindsetWhile this may have been paraphrased off of a famous person, it’s really good advice and it’s good for building your mindset. By taking a moment each day to do something that just terrifies you, not only will you learn how strong you are, but you will also find yourself trying new things that you thought were far out of your reach and capability.

Have a most outstanding day

Life is an adventure. I create adventure everyday, instead of making something the same old, boring routine – why not add some excitement to it. Like when I go for a run I like to imagine I’m running in a stadium being watched by thousands or looking down over the Himalays, or when sprinting trying to have that adrenaline rush that predator is after me. Be creative, think tall, think smart.

As Einstein once said

“we are only limited by the boundaries of our own thought.”

I attended an Internet seminar where I got to speak with you both in Perth.

I also went to an unlimited power seminar ran by “empowerment” in Perth last month

& before I signed up with you I hired a Tony Robbins Coach through the Tony Robbins companies

I wanted you to be updated as to my success I have started a big adventure
can you do me a favour & pass it on to

Hi Robyn
Great to hear from you again! It was great to meet you at the seminars and I know all about the energy work you’re doing. I agree with it and don’t talk much about that (indepth) in this blog as it can be a bit much for most people. I stick to the standard “run of the mill” motivation and mindset stuff that can help anyone and everyone that wants to help themselves. Hopefully, more people like yourself emerge that want to help others and the environment we all live in.
Thanks for visiting and call back often. I will forward your message to 21CA. It’s always great to hear success stories from our graduates.
Regards – Sean

Hi Sean

Some of the material on your blog is more than just standard ‘run of the mill’. It may be more simplified in how it is delivered but the message is still very powerful.

Success stories are always great to hear. On my mastermind call this morning a lady, Ellie Drake, was mentioned. I had never heard of her before. What I have seen so far looks like an amazing success story and made life her adventure.

Why are we sitting around procrastinating?

I love your attitude and overall outlook on life. I second that motion…

My husband (Justin) and I leave on September 30th to backpack to various countries around the world for a year or so.

As we have been planning for our adventure we have been updating a blog. http://www.nomadbackpackers.com We would love to have other opinions, ideas, encouragement, advice, helpful tips, and more left as comments.

Thanks,

Hi Sean! just found your website.
very interesting ideas and point of views…

I fully agree when you say that DOING something is not enougth.. living with adventure for me is BEING someone who is adventurous, curious and ready to learn new things about himself and the world

It’s more an attitude, than a particular thing: someone who goes out for a walk does not automatically is doing something less adventourous compared to someone climbing the rocks in australia!

thanks for the space ;-)

Hi Sean,
it’s true – with all the amenities and little luxuries we have these days we forget the adventure part of life too easily.
I love learning new things and am out on a limb there all the time and love it ( currently getting my head around internet marketing ;) ).
Your last point about the mindset is great. There is always a fear to tackle, big or small, which will help you grow and take more living out of your life. You need to eat the biggest frog first (tackle the task that you hate most) – then your day will role out great as you are a success already :)

When you hook up with the right people, marry your match, live the lifestyle that you want and plan to acheive your goals, you life certainly is an adventure. Our adventure started a few years ago and this is definately the happiest I have ever been, before that I was searching but I never knew what it was I was looking for.

A lot of people are searching and not knowing what they are looking for. That’s what stops a lot of them making their life adventure and later in life being able to sit back and reflect on the joy and happiness they’ve had and the difference they’ve made.

I’m pleased you found the key to the door that started your life adventure.

Reply

Bernadette Hay July 12, 2010 at 5:33 am

Just been thinking that sometimes we do have to make that adventure happen to achieve our goal.

I was attending a training that Jim Rohn was taking. I was sitting way up in the ‘bleaches’ totally absorbed and entranced in the training. However I was thinking to myself it would be great to meet him personally but couldn’t see how I could do that. I was just one of the a few thousand who would love to do the same thing.

While listening and learning I was still trying to think of a game plan and an idea struck me. As soon as the session was finished I raced all the way down but he was already gone. Thinking, thinking or maybe without thinking, I just went off in the direction he’d gone. If I shouldn’t be there I was sure someone would tell me but I had to seize the opportunity.

I did catch up with him and had a chat. It was incredible. And of course I got my photo with him and it takes pride of place in the centre of my wall because it is an experience that will now never be able to be repeated.

I totally agree Sean. Life surely is an adventure. I like your advice about actively deciding to try new things, go new places, meet new people etc etc etc. Even when driving locally to the shops, going to work, or visiting friends I now make it a priority to go a different route. To see what is around. To find new places. More than once I have been “lost” on the way to somehwere because I spotted something interesting and stopped to check it out. Recently I have travelled to Thailand. The first time I went alone with a room booked but no daily itnerary. It was the best holiday I ever had. I met a guy the second day and we clicked and are now good friends. I went places and saw things that people on package tours can only dream about. Actually no they can’t because they have no idea what they missed.

Reply

Rita Pepper March 14, 2010 at 9:27 am

You know Ray most people who go visiting other places never really see what a place is really about
Adventure is not having a set plan but really meeting the local people, when we were running tours if a client mentioned then would like to see something that wasn’t on our “tour” we would arrange to take them if possible, if not we would point them to others who could, we found many of these people now friends.

Hi Sean,

These sound like great ideas. I think I’m going to try it out. I’m going to do one of each of the things you suggest. I have lots of things I want to do and places I want to see. I have a few things that I am scared of doing and I’m going to actually go and do one. I’m going to throw all my options in a hat, pick one out and go and do it.

I think trying new things; especially things that you’re afraid of, builds your confidence and self-esteem. It pushes the boundaries of your comfort zone and makes you stronger. I’m going to give this a go.

Tom McEwin March 15, 2010 at 9:05 pm

I think you are right to point out how the ‘should do list’ can some times crowd out the ‘want to do’ list. In this situation rather than life being a quest for happiness and adventure, it would seem to be more a place of placid contentment. Not that this is a bad thing compared to the existence of many in the world who have difficulty getting clean water and good food to eat.

But there can be more to life – by chasing our dreams rather than by merely doing what we think is expected of us. By trying to break free and live a life less ordinary.

PS – you’ve got me singing Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ in my head now. Reminds me of Karoke last NYE – definitely something which scared me.

Life does get in the way. Deal to the ‘thing’ that got in the way but still keep your eye on the ‘prize’.

I am a bit of a thrill seeker and have a goal on going on the top 10 roller coasters in the world. I’ve seen them and I’m sure I would be screaming.

I have done a bit of abseiling that does require you to get over a ledge. That and being harnessed in something that just ‘goes’ and you have no choice is a different kettle of fish to actually jumping off a ledge.

Good on you for making a bungy jump part of your life adventure.

Now that you know so many people via the Internet – why not go and meet with them in person for a coffee? Let me know if you want to, we have some really nice coffee shops here :)

Great stuff Sean! Life is an adventure – where the bloody hell am I??

Ideas are gold – to me anyway. I have a problem with the last one. I have tried to do something that scares me but I keep chickening out! Approaching a comedienne & asking for an interview. Maybe I am not ready for it. Will keep talking to strangers.

Actually, Kyle Cease (an inspirational comedy dude form The States) lives and breathes this. He is super funny though! I watched a video of him approaching the (now grown-up) kid from Jerry McGuire and ‘interviewing’ him. Makes a complete fool of himself, acts like one of those fanatical fans, asks silly questions. Lesson he teaches is thinking “outside of the box.” It’s all so wonderful but unless you put it into practice rather than watch from the sidelines, it’s not a life lived to its potential.

As everybody is different I am sure a lot of the things I do would scare others and vice versa, but that’s the great thing – we can learn from each other that it is not as scary as we might think :)

Ok – This is too far out there its spooky. This week I started a 12 week course in nursing which will lead to further studies, and next year full time study.
Then today I went for a walk on the beach. there is nothing new in that, but I did do something that I never normally do. I walked along the rocks from one beach to another at Caloundra. Usually I am too scared to walk on the rocks in case the waves (tide) comes in too quickly and I am stuck with no where to go.

But this time I had a strong need to walk along a path I had not taken before. How much of a fun adventure is that? The Mind and the body in one day. Isn’t Life Grand. You only get one life, so make the most of it…..stepping very outside of my comfort zone this year, and will continue to do every day. Thanks Sean for your inspiration and wise words :)

I try to talk to strangers as much as possible. Since having a computer and being online I have become a bit of a hermit I must admit and don’t go out much.

Hi Jill,

I share your parachuting scare. And somehow I still have it in my head to do it. The way for me is to do a tandem jump, so I get some “support” with the jumping itself. And I am sure driving my car every day is more dangerous (more likely to cause me harm) than to parachute jump. The jump is just a bit more crazy for us :)

However it is not something that has made it on to my to do list. The thing I want to do to scare the heck out of myself is go on the top 10 biggest roller coaster rides in the world. From what I’ve seen they might even be an out of mind experience.

People are starting to share their adventures…
I met my greatest idol – huge fan since I was 12 years old and I ma 34 now and this person is still my idol. It was 12 years ago in Newcastle NSW. I was in 3 year uni & I always thought, if I ever met her would would I have an intelligent conversation with her. I knew as an intelligent person I could do that.

It would involve – inspiring human being, great role model for post-feminism, strength, determination against all odds. And many other excellent points…

However, when she got off the bus at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre my brain ran as fast as it could & left me all alone… She came up to the fence that seperated her from us mere mortals and all I could manage was, “So Kylie, you took the bus?”
She looked at me and said, “Yes.” That was it…

Who: Kylie Minogue. It was the greatest night of my life… but I should have some new goals of adventure including Kylie – improve on that first conversation. Or maybe get her to re-create it with me to post on my blog? Ha! That would be an adventure for April Fools Day

Hi Wal,

maybe figuring out what terrifies you (after you have obviously survived it) might be an idea? I don’t think you have to actually like/enjoy everything, but (at least for me) it is more about facing my fears, realizing that I can do it without greater harm to myself and deciding from personal experience if it is something I want to continue doing or not.

I also don’t like horror movies. The effects they use tend to scare me. But I know that I can do it – now I just choose not to do it because it doesn’t add fun to my life. But it is a conscious decision, not an experience I avoid because it might be bad.

G’day Sean,
Always love an adventure. 1st one was at 9 when Dad bribed me to learn the piano if he paid for a horse ride I HAD to take. Other adventures were fortnightly Jazz piano lessons which were a round trip of 250 kilometres, and then becoming a professional musician. Moving interstate like a gypsy and constantly learning new songs and skills in music.

Biggest adventure up to then was deciding to learn to fly at age 39 when I had to go to Sydney Tech and study many subjects, followed by practical lessons. Studying alongside 17 – 19 year olds who were just out of school was terrifying. They could do the maths and they remembered lots of stuff EASILY. The next 24 years of seaplane flying were the ultimate adventure with some of the destinations we went to, but it was all fun, even learning some Japanese.

Finally, the decision to be different to most of my music and flying mates and create some ongoing and residual wealth through real estate, shares and YOTA is probably the most demanding adventure of all and one where the brain is constantly engaged in overdrive and turbo boost mode. What a challenge ! Bet I don’t ever get rust on the brain cells – there isn’t time !

Cheers

Getting out of your comfort zone is the greatest adventure!

I started a new job yesterday in the city – it is so different to anything I have EVER done. It’s not where I want to stay forever but I know I have something to learn there. I have the foresight to see that the universe wants to see how I handle this new situation – as if this is a stepping stone to something far, far bigger. I get this then I am ready…

It is scary but I try not to think of that. What I focus on is that life is an adventure if you choose it to be. Constantly choose to take on new things, you grow & stretch as a person & it can add value to everything you do. And it can even inspire you!!

In 2009 for the first time for as long as I can remember, I walked into a room with around 300 people and I did not know one person, I was terrified but determined to change my life.

You know what I did. This guy got up to speak, and what I heard was a mans pride in his sons, his love for his wife and family, and his desire to help others change their lives the way he had changed his.
NO!! this person is not the one who has changed my life, I did he just showed me I could.

Hey Sean,

I definitely started off my adult life as an adventure. A year out of high school, a mate and I went cycling from Portland, Victoria, to Adelaide. We parted ways there, as he didn’t like the heat, and I had plans of cycling around Australia. From Adelaide, I rode to Waikerie, hoping to connect with a fella that was helping people find jobs better than the CES (at the time) was. I arrived too late for oranges and too early for grapes (or was it the other way around?) From there, I then decided to head to Port Lincoln to try and get work on the fishing boats. I got as far as Port Pirie before the money was running out. It was at this stage that I realised that I didn’t have enough life experience to pull off what I wanted to do. It was all well and good to get out of my comfort zone, but I was also attempting something with very little preparation. But it was an experience that I wouldn’t swap for quids, and the cycling part of it, I hope to continue at some stage in the future, once I’ve replaced my J.O.B. with a lifestyle.

Just a thought.

Cheers,

Pete

Yes I have had ups and downs but always bounced back until one day I decided to stop the bouncing bit and just did my own thing, be true to myself and have loads of fun.

Now that I have the fun part right, I am into manifesting dreams. Now that is really cool!

Growth – Never stop learning
Gratitude – Be grateful and celebrate everything you have and are – no matter how small

Oops forgot to add – do something that scares you is a great thing because everything you want is on the other side of fear.

Have to say I don’t do something scary every day. Maybe that’s a challenge.

I am having trouble commenting on this page. This is just a test to see if it was something in the link I had included.

I started on one page on and after reading one I clicked onto the post to download Sean’s e-book The Secret Law of Attraction. (have deleted link in the hope this comment will load up)

On there was another special quote I like. “Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take – but by the moments that take our breath away!” This is what you’ll get from making your life an adventure.

There was also a quote on the video there – “Life is an adventure – or nothing” Helen Keller

Hi Sean,

Take the time to do something that terrifies me? This sounds like a very good way to spice up life & is something I will have to revisit, thanks for the tips!
