Like Attracts Like

by Sean Rasmussen on January 16, 2008

While you may not have been paying attention in physics class in school, one principle has been coming up time and time again in success and motivation books – like attracts like. Not only can you use this to help you chart your success, but you can also use this principle when you are making decisions about what to do next when you finally do reach your goals.

Not Just Optimism

One thing that you do want to keep in mind is that like attracts like isn’t just about being eternally positive. In truth, we’re all going to have moments when we are mad at the world and we think that people are out to get us. But when we want to reach certain goals in our life, we need to begin to believe that they can and that they will happen. By changing our mindset to being open to possibilities, we can begin to create better circumstances for our success to happen.

Surround Yourself

When you want to attract success to yourself, why would you surround yourself with anything less than signs of what you consider to be successful? You might want to keep pictures of your success goals around you or you might want to talk with people who already have the things that you want. This will help to build the energy of prosperity, helping to attract those things you want into your life.

Recognize Distractions

In addition, you need to realize that while you might want to surround yourself with positive things, you also need to remove anything from your life that might be repelling your success. For example, this might be things like negative people or those who tell you that you can’t do what you want to do. While you can’t keep yourself in a sterile environment and away from every little bit of negativity, you might want to avoid it as much as possible.

Have a most outstanding day

I think you raise an important distinction in this post. Using a positive mindset to attract success goes beyond mere optimism. For example, there are plenty of people who are naturally optimistic but yet unhappy with what they consider their measure of success.

Rather, attracting success seems to require action to increase the positive influences in one’s life and also to reduce the negative influences. For me this comes down to how committed I am to making a change, and whether something is important enough to make it a definite priority and clear goal, rather than a vague hope. It can still be tough to make the changes necessary, but at least by having clear goals the decisions I need to make become a lot clearer.

That’s a good point that you make there Tom. I have no issue being around people who are optimistic, however I love being around those who take action in pursuing there dreams.

I personally thrive off the energy that these people illustrate. I feel that it brings weight to my own actions and helps me continue no matter what the challenges.

How good were you in physics Sean? Don’t overlook that in some situations it is the opposites that attract (eg magnetic fields, men and women). And in others we need a complimentary attraction (organic life and air, hydrogen and oxygen, salt and pepper).

I like that phrase you used “…being open to possibilities”. I became aware of it a few years back at a training course that taught that we should create new possibilities for ourselves and be open to exploring those. I suppose it’s just another way of saying that we should be open-minded but in reallity it is much more powereful than that.

To be open-minded is passive. To create new possibilities for yourself is active. It involves actively looking for new ways to experience life and achieve our goals as well as constant review of what we are presently doing.

And I agree that surrounding yourself with things that motivate us to success and enable that success are imperitive.

Our lives have a momentum. Our habitual states attract events and circumstances that tend to perpetuate those states. Like-states attract like-states. If we try to change our habitual states, we find that our old states have a momentum that needs to be addressed before we can go to the new habitual state.

Hi Sean,

I like the thought of preparing ourselves to be successful. I think it starts with creating the right mindset, and focusing on being more positive and putting up pictures of your goals etc.

But, I think we do need to consider our environment. Maybe we need to remove some of the things or people that tend to have a negative influence on us. If you can’t remove someone completely from your life (family members-you know who you are), maybe you can just limit the time you spend with them.

If there’s some part of our lives where we’re not valuing ourselves; that is the place to start.

Our environment does have a huge influence on us.

Changing out environment is the start so that we can then change the other aspects of our lives that are bringing us down

This is why I really enjoy participating in this competition, Sean.

I can appear to be chasing the Fistful of Dollars that you offer, but really, in the meantime:
I am bombarding myself in an amazingly positive environ;
and ‘deep-sea’ diving in amongst not only your Wisdom and Wealth of Experience, and the Knowledge of Napolean Hill;
I am benefited by the wonderful people around me who are sharing themselves too.

How can I possibly do any better than this?

I sit and read this article on today’s date 26/03/2010. I realize that some 12 months ago, I was in this position of listening to negative people, I was actually letting them override what I wanted to do and belive.
I’m happy to say I’m still doing what ( I ) want to do. I have pushed the negative out, it has been hard, I still have a way to go but I’m getting there. the Very good thing about it is I’m aware of it and know how to handle it now.

Hi,
I am in a place where I have had to tell a person I live with to say nothing or else I will move on.
one of the things this person keeps saying is
” if you havent started to make some real money by(date) you will give it up”
and it can be very hard at times to stay positive.

Hi Sean,

Well I have enjoyed reading all the comments on this subject almost as much as the article itself. Now there’s no pressure to race through I can take my time and enjoy the writings here.

I especially enjoy this post. There is so much to consider, magnetism – while at the same time opposites attracting – birds of a feather….. It can be hard knowing a negative from a positive as well. I recall an example on this. That example is: I was heading off to a function one morning that I wasn’t sure about going. I phoned my mentor and complained. Look I said, I know who’s going to be there, I know what they’re going to say. I am negative before I start! He said, “No, You are being positive” Ah, what, how!? He explained, “Well, imagine of you were expecting something really good and it didn’t turn out that way, you would leave feeling disappointed ‘negative’ however, if you expect the worst and you get something better than you will leave in a ‘positive’ mindset”

Makes sense.. but learning life’s messages can be tricky sometimes. :)

Hi Sean,

I dream of living in a sterile environment where I am surrounded by like minded positive people in a way that will boost my capacity to inspire & love. I really enjoy being optimistic but feel that it is all so easily crushed when you have too many negative influences or are surrounded by those that like to keep you at their level. It’s so nice to read these positive posts!
