Mindset Mastery 75 – A Plan For The Subconscious

by Sean Rasmussen on January 16, 2009

Mindset Mastery eBookOur last Mindset Mastery post left off with the quote that begins today’s. That one sentence, as simple a thing as it may seem to do, is a plan of sorts for rewiring your subconscious. It’s an amazingly powerful act, and one that cynics will often deny, but as you’ll see there is solid logic behind it.

“Repeating and reaffirming orders to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith.” – Napoleon Hill

The Power Of Exposure

Maybe the meaning will become clearer after reading the following explanation explaining how some people sometimes become criminals. In the words of a famous criminologist, “When men first come into contact with crime, they abhor it. If they remain in contact with crime for a time, they become accustomed to it, and endure it. If they remain in contact with it long enough, they finally embrace it, and become influenced by it.”

This statement is the equivalent of saying that any thought-impulse which is repeatedly passed on to the subconscious mind is, finally, accepted and acted upon by the subconscious mind, which proceeds to translate that impulse into its physical equivalent, by the most practical method available.

Relate And Understand

Undoubtedly you can find at least some ounce of truth and understanding in this statement, particularly in this age of increased crime, acceptance, and justification. The more we all, as society, are exposed to crimes through daily news accounts and the media, the more immune we become to it. At times we even find ourselves justifying the actions of the criminals we see, or empathizing with their dilemma(s) which we feel apparently drove them to their crimes. And as we see more and more powerful and famous criminals hardly paying for their crimes, it crosses our minds that we are working too hard to live honestly when so many are doing so well by living dishonestly.

Positive Reinforcement

Of course, the majority of us will not go that route, but still the thought remains. A better interpretation of these events would be the message that Hill is trying to communicate—that simply exposing your thoughts to positivity and achievement, and directing them in that way rather than the alternative, is a pathway to success—and one that anyone can do, regardless of income, status, or any other supposed requirement. That simple power of positive reinforcement is enough to tip the balance to a life of success and contentment.

ditto current financial markets and so called reality of economics. We are in the biggest spoon fed spiral of mass hysteria seen for generations. Try pulling a few mates together and acually asking the question “so what has really changed between now and last year?” surprisingly little but the worlds collective confidence is taking a hammering! you can see the negative drain on the collective just as if it were an individual person.

Hi Sean,

This is a very powerful reminder that we need to guard our thoughts. What we focus on we get and what we say to ourselves is what we will create in our lives.

I can’t remember who said it but I really believe that what we think and say we will into existence. Also, we are what we live. Even if we don’t like it at the time, if we live with it for too long; it becomes normal for us.

This post is a timely reminder that we need to consciously think and evaluate if the things we are thinking and focusing on are actually what we want.

Makes me wonder what all the war computer games, war and crime movies and TV sequels instill into our subconscious, and into the minds and thoughts of our kids. I can’t imagine it being too much god :(

Also if you tell a kid often enough that it is “too stupid” to do something it might obey and just become that, even so it wasn’t in the first place. It’s a bit scary to think how much influence we have with stuff we “just said” without thinking about it and what we cause. To others and to ourselves.

On the other hand – we have the power to bring this to good use. As long as we take a conscious choice and take responsibility for our thoughts, words and actions.

Hi Renee,

I’m with you. We have to be careful what we let into our subconscious and even more so with our children. I think we can process these things better than children not that it’s any better for us.

This post highlights for me the need to guard very carefully the things we let take root in our subconscious mind. Because whatever it is will be our reality.

It’s the old frog boiling in the water metaphor… Not that I like the idea of boiling a frog, but the saying goes that if you put it in boiling water straight away, it’d jump (or “croak”). But if you turn the heat up gradually, it won’t notice – until boiling point.

Having read through your post, Sean and then scrolling through the comments above, I am reminded of a study I read about somewhere. A group of students were given a new teacher for the year who was told that the students were a group of ‘high to gifted’ abilities, and for the year the class was taught as such. The punch-line was that at the end of the study the previously average-graded students, were performing consistently at much higher levels.
It’s often easier to see things from a distance, that is when we look at ‘others’, but we can apply the same attitude to ourselves. We don’t know what we can do, ’til we do it!

Hi Jo,

I love that story. It just goes to show that you can alter someone’s destiny just by changing the way they see themselves. The teacher expected gifted students and the students behaved as if they were.

If we were to start living as if we were already the successful people we wanted to be; I’m guessing that we’d be on the fast-track to success.

The method of developing faith given here by Napoleon Hill is tried and true and it works. I know because I am experiencing it right now after following his instructions. Modern techniques (eg NLP) have provided other ways of developing faith.
