It’s an ages-old adage, but as with most adages of the sort, one that lives on because of its basic core of truth. Life is what you make it. It gives what you ask of it. It is not predetermined, it is moldable, limited only by what you ask of it.
The below poem is very powerful if you grasp the meaning of it and apply it to your life.
Aim For The Best In Life
Remember, it takes no more effort to aim high in life, to demand abundance and prosperity, than it does to accept misery and poverty. A great poet has accurately stated this universal truth in these lines:
“I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
“For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
“I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.”
Life Is What You Demand Of It
Many people miss this point. Life is an effort regardless of what you do with it. If you are complacent and missing out on what you wish you had, your effort exhibits in the form of stress and struggle. If you are positive and effect a positive change, your efforts will be spent, but also rewarded.
Anyone who has ever been under stress or struggled to succeed, earn money, or pay the bills, will agree that it is no easier to live a subdued life. It is still an effort, and I’d daresay one that in the end is much harder than the life you build of success. As Hill says here, the choice is yours. You only need to decide whether you want to enjoy your efforts or continue to feel the pressure that comes from misplaced attitude and effort.

Nice one Sean, rings true the word.
Thanks for the inspiration, keep it up.
Have an awesome day.
Cheers, Pam
I love this poem. If only we were to adopt this philosophy, we could eliminate any jealousy in our lives and understand that it’s entirely up to us what we decide to get out of life. Then we can get on with it and do something with our lives.
BTW. Does anybody know who wrote it?
Thanks Sean for giving us the opportunity to re-think the wisdom of Napoleon Hill.
Cheers,
Gary
@Tommy Turbo. Thanks mate. I love that one myself
@Pamela Sheedy. I do my best
. Thanks for inspiring me with your comments.
@Gary Birch. We can all start, one by one, and adopt this attitude ourselves. You and I for starters, hey?
I do like that one. I have read it a few times before somewhere although it is good to reread and to ask yourself the question, ‘what am I worth?’

Hi Sean, may I ask what happened to my post???
Hi KC. I’m not sure what has happened. I was wondering what Tommy had responded to, but I have never seen one. I’m afraid that it may have been accidently deleted through all the SPAM posts I get here in the blog.
Sorry for any inconvenience.
Hi Sean,
This poem always reminds me that the quality of my life will be determined by what I demand of myself. I feel if I settle for anything less than what I truly want; I will be cheating myself of the life I deserve.
I have to be willing to work hard for what I want. I have to know what I want and I have to be disciplined in my pursuit of success. If I’m to be successful, I have to be willing to demand the very best from myself and from life.
I am setting my demands high.
I haven’t seen that poem before, but I like it.
What a lot of people (I think) don’t realize is that you can re-negotiate with life even later. This argument “I am too old for that” is a very lame excuse in my eyes. Yes, there might be challenges that you wouldn’t have had 20 years ago. But there will evenly be things that are much easier for you now than 20 years before.
If you don’t ask or say what you want – who is supposed to know? So, ask for what you really want, be willing to put in your part, and see what happens.
