Mindset Mastery 16 – Barnes On Persistence

by Sean Rasmussen on June 16, 2008

Mindset Mastery Ebook By Sean RasmussenIt’s important to know that no one is saying that knowing and utilizing the secret, or following the thirteen principles and being definite in thought, means that you will get rich quick; your life can change in a relatively short period of time, but nothing worthwhile happens overnight. Like Barnes, building wealth takes initiative and planning, and a healthy dose of patience and follow-through.

“Barnes did not instantly become Edison’s partner at his first interview. He did get a chance to work in the Edison offices, at a very nominal wage, doing work that was unimportant to Thomas Edison; but that work was most important to Barnes, because it gave him an opportunity to display his “merchandise” where his intended “partner” could see it.

“Months went by. Apparently nothing happened to bring the coveted goal which Edwin Barnes had set up in his mind as his definite major purpose. But something important was happening in Barnes’ mind. He was constantly intensifying his desire to become the business associate of Edison.”

The First Step To Wealth Creation

Putting yourself in line for success and wealth creation is an essential first step; nothing fruitful can happen if you do not take that first step, and place yourself in the path of possibility.

I will see you back here Monday and Thursday every week for the continuation of the Mindset Mastery series.

Hi Sean,

Just spend and awsome weekend with Mark Rolton in Sydney for the Property Options Workshop. As you say, nothing happens quickly but if armed with the right tools, it is all there in front of you. Just a llittle hard work and you can have it all. I’m on that path. My life is not easy with 3 young children under 5, a business to run, a house to keep and property options to pursue but if I can do it with all that on my plate then I don’t really want to hear excuses from people as to why they cannot achieve too. Turn off that TV. Devote 1 hour a night to your goals and dreams and make it a reality. Change your mindset and you change your life.

Can you tell I’m feeling empowered? :-)

Regards, Eileen.

Hi Eileen
Empowered is the word! Sound like you have found your “Needs” (Mark Rolton pun).
1 hour is not a lot to invest towards a bright future… I agree :D

Really good post!

I totally agree with Brans that success and wealth doesn’t happens overnight, it’s not any magic – we have to work hard for it and the most important thing is the initiative & planning step towards our focus.

Hi Sean,

I think by mastering the principles of success we improve our chances of succeeding and achieving our goals. Changing our life starts with changing our thinking.

I really agree with putting yourself in the path of success. I think we have to know what our goals are and find some small way to bring it into our life. I love the way Barnes just put himself in a place where he could show Edison what he was capable of.

I think like Barnes we have to be clear about what we want and then be willing to work hard for it, regardless of how long it takes to get what we want.

Edward C Barnes worked for a nominal wage because had the attitude of “Work to Learn” and not “Work to Earn”. If you have this attitude your income will grow much faster.

Hi Sean,
Yes, placing yourself correctly is so important for success. Barnes did place himself correctly and virtually just waited for his opportunity to prove himself to Thomas Edison. To prove that he was worthy to become his partner in business. Barnes’s patients to begin with led to a 30 year business partnership with Edison. That is because Edwin Barnes placed himself correctly by being in the company of Edison when an opportunity did arise.

Also. the first step is something that I relate to very well and can understand the concept.

Thanks,

Jill.

Thanks Sean.

WE never know when an opportunity will present itself. Being at the right place at the right time helps but it is better to be able to recognize that opportunity when it does arise.
I am fortunate to be able to grab an opportunity or more to the point the ability to know what it is

There really is a lot of ground work to do beforehand, isn’t there? To use the cliche, success certainly doesn’t happen overnight.

That’s right Lina there is a lot of ground work to do to achieve success in any calling. Many people do not achieve success because they don’t want to move out of they’re comfort zone. Achieving success is all to hard for them. Basically they want something to happen overnight and they give up when it doesn’t. Success is achieved by taking constant action and persistence.

Very well observed Danny, this is why there are so many “get rich quick”schemes out there. Because there is a market for it. But if it would be so easy, I guess the person selling it would be doing that and not go through the effort to sell a different product.

Hello Sean,

Finding your path in life really is very easy, like you said once you know how to apply the Secret. Sitting back and waiting for it to happen will not create the life of your dreams. I like how you point to others success stories, that gives me Motivation to keep on going.

Cheers

I haven’t quite worked out how you do it, Sean, but your words are of such a quality that I can hear the shattering of misconceptions of thought (eg. it’s not possible; I can’t do this; everyone else might be able to, but not me; etc. etc. etc.) all over the place when I read this post. That first breakthrough of a new thought is like watching the birth of a baby. Thank you.

Hi Sean
Barnes worked to become the business associate of Edison and he was never going to fail, the burning desire he had was so strong that nothing could deter him.

G’day Sean,
I’m constantly having motivation and inspiration towards being persistent with my wealth creation, through the 3 biggies of real estate, Shares / options and YOTA. I attend nearly all of the various webinars as they are presented OR watch the recorded versions. This is a discipline I love, and 1 000 000 000 000 000 or more times more enjoyable than ” Home and Away ”

My work day starts [ after walking my gratitudes ] with the Halifax Brokers ” Opening Bell ” webinar at 8.30, so my mind is primed into wealth creation mode every day. Great start.

Barnes’ story has always intrigued me, but until this series of yours, my depth of understanding of it was very shallow. Many thanks for a great one.
Cheers

It took time (months) for Barnes to get his opportunity with Edison. What if he had been the master of time? Maybe he could have done it much sooner?

Edwin Barnes didn’t just sit back and wait for the opportunity he knew would arrive. He spent that time building and increasing a desire that was already of a proportion that most people could not imagine. He constantly reinforced his belief and surety. We need to remember that. If we don’t stay on top of things, and constantly reaffirm our determination and desire, we can gradually lose that edge. Especially if the opportunity we are waiting for takes a couple of years to manifest rather than months.

My husband is in school to become a teacher. This is something he really really wants to do. He wants to be the kind of teacher like the ones he had who brought him out of his shell and encouraged him to use the brilliant mind he was hiding. This means 5 years of college and devotion to his burning desire. And recognizing when there are opportunities for extra money for school, and opportunities for work that furthers his degree. All the while trying to keep us afloat financially in the interim.

Burning Desire. Determination. A definite plan.

I definitely agree, putting yourself in line with success is an essential first step, you need to know exactly WHY you want to be successful, and you need to have faith in yourself that you can do it. You HAVE to have a dream!
