Hi Sean,

I can't believe I missed this the first couple of times around. So, what do they say; the eyes are the windows to the soul? Clearly Edison saw the determination in Barnes' eyes and realised he wasn't a man to be trifled with.

Also, Edison may have found that a very desirable quality in his assistant. Because anything he gave him to do would get done.

I once had a discussion with a friend concerning determination and drive. My stance being that the most successful had both to the point of being obsessive-compulsive. That being said, it means that the most successful people are "afflicted" with a mental disorder. Personally, I don't think this is a bad thing. All of my favorite people are at least slightly unhinged. :D

I wonder if Edison is telling it all here. People are like radio stations, they broadcast. I sometimes amaze people by telling them what they are broadcasting (some are louder than others). Edison was, by all accounts, highly intuitive and part of intuition is to know such things. I suspect Edison intuitively knew that Barnes would get the job done by the messages he was getting from the broadcast. If Barnes was in a high powered state, the broadcast would have been very loud.

I agree that this can still happen today. Once you see determination in someone's eyes to do whatever it takes the biggest hurdle is already taken. Because people do recognize that strength and somehow object less than when this determination is missing. Probably because they know they won't be able to stop that person anyway ;)

I note your comment re the drive being a lost characteristic today. After these last few days, I trust your point have view may now allow that there still is a 'little' drive present in a few places.
Maybe the drive diminished when people started thinking chauffeurs were the goal?
