Hi Renee,

Yes, you have to know exactly what you want to achieve. You need the right kind of education but it's best to work to your strengths.

Again, this is where a Master Mind group will really help. You need to get all the skills and knowledge you require to be successful. But, you may need to get someone to handle the areas you're weak in.

I'm seeing myself more and more in Napolean Hill. I see the public school system as a stepping stone on a journey filled with rocks. The art of learning never ends and yet too many "students" are just waiting for the day of graduation to stop being lectured. If you're not surrounding yourself with teachers life gets pretty boring in my opinion.

I guess it very much depends on what you want to do and where your talents lie.
I went to Uni and studied telecommunications (ok, a long time ago) and it still serves me well today. Not necessarily the individual information (I guess I don't remember 80% of that anymore), but I was also taught how to approach a problem and to how to find a solution for a problem that no one came across before. That has helped me in "real life" even so it was part of my formal education.

But if my passion would have been to be a professional musician, that uni degree wouldn't help me much ....

I guess it is about making sure you have the right tools for the task ahead, and if you don't have the tools or don't know how to use them - find a person who is great with that tool and have them do it for you.

I remember a season of Donald Trump's Show "The Apprentice" where they had a battle between what they called the Book Smarts (university educated business people) and Street Smarts (non-university educated business people).

Of course, half of it's for dramatic effect and entertainment. But they were kind of doing an experiment, or at least trying to make a comment, about the differences between the two.

I can't deny the value of a good, university education. I think people who generalise and say that getting a uni degree is a waste of time, are wrong. Some of the brightest, sharpest minds on the planet are developed at universities. I've had the privilege to study with some of them in my life in the US and in Oz.

But of course, formal education without real-life education is unbalanced. And I'm not saying that you need a uni degree to be successful. Far from it. We all know the examples of non-formally educated billionaires (like Gates, Branson and a long list more).

Learning comes in all forms. I'm very grateful for my formal education, but I also learn from reading, travel and living. In the 21st century we need to be smart and selective about our sources of knowledge and learning. And to pick mentors carefully.

Hi Sean,

I think if you're really clear about what you're trying to achieve, it will make it easier to determine the kinds of knowledge that you might need to be successful. If you're thinking about further education or a course of some kind, you need to decide if it will move you towards achieving your goals or away from them.

Obviously, you need to choose to learn new skills that will help you achieve your goals otherwise it just dilutes your focus and concentration away from what you want.
