Hi Elly,

I think that's a very fair statement. Companies are more interested in what you bring to them. They definitely want people who can save them time and money and who can make them money.

You really have to be good at selling yourself nowadays.

Hi Sean

I can relate to many of those comments above. I used to work very hard to please my company with no extra remuneration for my efforts.

I worked in my own practice for a few years and then went out into corporate again. I noticed that the people that got ahead had 3 things that they used to sell themselves to the Management when they were going for a promotion. They had confidence, the ability to save the company time and the ability to save the company money.

I don't know if that is what it is like everywhere now. Years ago you often got a good job on your character references, experience and education.

Now you have to be a very good salesperson and convince a company of what you can do for them.

I have the feeling that the entitlement-thinking becomes stronger and stronger. Not sure if it has to do with how then now 20-30 yrs have grown up, receiving everything without having to do anything for it. They come to work and demand title, pay etc without giving any worth or want a raise just because a more senior person gets more than they do, not because they bring the same value to the business.

Hi Sean,
Sometimes it may not be known when someone does not have self worth. An example is that I once worked for a company and although I was their best salesperson I did not have the courage to ask for more money. If I could have established my self worth in my own mind I would have been confident enough to ask for a commission on sales.

I was tempted to say "I'm sorry," Samantha yet I know, from personal experience, that our past is what makes is who we are. The idea that you can get past it, not dwell on it or use it as an excuse/ crutch tells a lot about you.

I grew up with foster kids, since I was born my parents took in children from the community for various reasons. I was angry for so long, in fact, sometimes I find myself falling back into the anger as it was all I knew for a long time. But I got out and I found my voice through isolation while living there. Instead of speaking up and getting ridiculed, not listened to or put down I poured myself into writing and feel I have honed my craft enough now to call myself a writer.
