In part 1 of Escape From Paid Slavery, I explained a view that has somewhat inspired me to break out of the Rat Race. In the past 5 years I have been heavily studying ways to improve my mindset. Personal development is a passion of mine and, though I’m not totally consumed by it, I acknowledge the massive importance it has in moving forward as a human being.
So, here’s a short story about my life so far:
I have lived in Australia, Denmark and Sweden and have worked in a few more countries. I call Australia home and this is where I was born. My Rat Race vocation was an electrician and I had my own electrical contracting business in Adelaide for about 8 years prior to winding it up and traveling around Australia with my wife Cherie and my Dutch Bargedog (Keeshond), Zac.
Zac spent most of the trip around Australia, hanging out of the window of my Toyota Troopcarrier 4WD while we drove across the country. Many bugs ended their days between his teeth! I became a professional pearldiver in Broome, Western Australia for a short while until my first son decided to arrive on the scene. The oil & gas and the construction industry then became my day time (and night time) occupation for the next 8 years.
I worked in places like Karratha, Mt Magnet, Kunnunurra and some places that weren’t quite the end of the world, but you could nearly see it from there! Karratha became my home away from home. I worked there in 1997, 2000 & 2003-2005.
I dubbed Karratha: Hotel California. “You can check out any time you like but you can never leave“.
Some Left Work In A Coffin
I saw people come and go, then come back again. Mind you, they saw me do the same. Many great friends were made in those years and many are still around. Unfortunately, a few too many aren’t. In the 8 years I spent in the Oil and Gas industry, which has a few too many carcinogens (cancer causing substances), 3 of my friends died from cancer while still in their prime. 1 of my friends overdosed on drugs at the age of Twentythree. 2 of my co-workers committed suicide. 1 guy got killed on the job when I was there (I didn’t personally know him but the impact was still big on everyone). Untold numbers got injured to the degree they didn’t return to work. I could go on, but I won’t.
These are the stories the media won’t tell you. It’s sad but true…
And here I was with a young family, busting my gut with a dayjob and an orchard to run at home. I was trying to desperately make ends meet and it seemed like I was heading down the same road as everyone else. The thing is that I probably was…
Time To Make A Change
What really rattled me was the staggering divorce rate in the industry. I was working shifts like: 2 weeks of 12 hour days, then 1 week home. Other times, 6 weeks at work, 1 week home (traveling 2 days of my time off). So I decided to move my family 1800km north to a new home in Karratha in 2003.
This was my first real solid move to get away from the Rat Race. The answers weren’t quite there yet, but I knew something had to change or I would end up like the rest: Another Statistic. Either dead or dead-broke!
“If you DON’T want the results that average person gets, then you MUST do what the average person DOES NOT”
A few years earlier, I read “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. Boy, did I discover some life changing ideas in there! Then I read “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki and went on to read many more great inspiring books. If you only read 2 books in your life, make it those 2.
Participation On A Grander Scale
Making a change gave me the start of the recipe for success, but there was something major missing. At this stage, I didn’t quite have the answer. In December 2003, I received the answer. I enrolled in a wealth creation program to learn about share trading and property strategies. If anything, it helped me start Taking Action. It was the final step: Putting the theory into reality. To start participating in life on a grander scale. To hold myself to a much higher standard and to stay there, because I deserved it. Just like everyone else, except it was time for me to step up. No more waiting for things to happen FOR me. Now, I would make it happen. Full stop.
I canceled my weekly Lotto ticket. I still know those numbers by heart. I wasn’t even going to let luck get in my way. I was doing it myself or not at all.
I made a declaration, to much ridicule from some people, that I was going to retire from the workforce and make a full time living from the stock market, property and internet marketing. I set a date and it was in concrete: January 15, 2006 was the date of freedom. Release from the everyday grind. No more Paid Slavery and workforce imprisonment. From the 15th January 2006, I was going to be the one in charge of my own destiny.
I started to get depressed about being at work. My mind was past this ‘stage’ in life. The decision was made and I was ready to leave – at ANY cost! I didn’t care if I left in an Ambulance, seriously, I just wanted to get out.
Well, be careful what you ask for… it seems the Law Of Attraction was listening to me.
Be Careful What You Ask For!
In December 2005, a 6.75kg scaffold tube was dropped from 12 meters and fell, like a spear, towards me and landed within centimeters of my right shoulder. When it hit the ground, it bounced back up and hit me on the shoulder. Besides a bruise, I was only startled. It took 2 days for me to realise that the pole would have paralysed me at best and most likely have killed me. The worksite I was on was so disorganised, it would have takes at least 60-70 minutes to get me to a hospital. Nearly another statistic, I escaped death on that day… only a few days prior to my ‘release date’.
The realisation of this made me physically ill, throwing up, becoming emotional and getting less focused. A workmate told me: “Sean. You’ve just had a Gypsies warning, mate! It’s time to leave…”
And I did.
I Fired My Boss
December 2005, I fired my boss. For good! Things have only improved since. I doubled my income in 23 months while still at work, doing everything in the evenings. Within 1 month of firing my boss, I nearly doubled my income again, then again after another 3 months. This removed ‘some stress’ (tongue in cheek) and I got more time (about 12 hours a day) freed up to do the things I wanted. Motivation, Inspiration and Personal Development have been a true passion of mine since.
Since those days, I have traveled extensively with my family and had much more time to enjoy with them.
People like Charles Haanel, Anthony Robbins, Dr John Demartini, Robert Kiyosaki, Napoleon Hill, Wallace Wattles and many more have left me inspired to do something much bigger than myself in this lifetime. I will achieve it and it will be good.
One day, I might even let you in on my grand goal dreams. One day…
Until then, have a most brilliant day!

Hi Sean, Thankyou for sharing such an inspirational blog. I too was in a dangerous job, driving 250 tonne dump trucks in the coal mines… Almost 2yrs ago I was hurt. A huge excavator bucket was dropped onto the head board of my truck..throwing me around the cab…it could have been worse…But I am still alive and it does change the way you think about things… Thankyou again for allowing me to follow you on your journey. Narelle
Sean,
Thankyou for sharing your story. I almost died in a car accident almost 5 years ago & I’ve had to re-learn how to walk, talk & do pretty much everything that most people take for granted. I’m nowhere near “good” yet, but my accident & having to struggle has given me a totally new perspective on life. For the first time in my life I feel like I’m in control & it feels great!
Your story reminded me that we are conditioned to work work work & have a huge debt, & that we can CHOOSE to change this way of thinking.
It’s by know means an easy journey, but it’s well worth it!
I’m not passionate about personal development yet, but I’m heading that way, & it’s an excellent thing to keep learning about oneself.
Congratulations again Sean.
Smiles,
Jen
Loved reading your story Sean. Very empowering & inspirational & straight from the heart too!!
Will endeavour to follow your footsteps as time passes.

Warm regards & take care,

I have had the privilege of hearing Sean’s story in person a couple of times in the last year. I learned more than Sean is revealing here and I can tell you that he has skipped over some of the extreme impacts he has had on the lives of many people on his journey. I am one of them!
His generosity and sincere care for friends and business associates is total! I won’t embarrass him with details just that fact that the man you see here is only a fraction of who he is in reality!
This story is like the tip of a rather large iceberg and one day you may have the honour to sit down and listen to this man over a beer and then you will know the depth of his character.

I too have had the privilege to hear some of Sean’s story first hand and can share with readers that have not met the man, he is fair dinkum aussie bloke that I am honored to call a friend.

Hi Sean,
I have read with great interest how you got out of the ‘rat race’. I have being working for the last 30 years as a professional engineer and in the last three years as an engineering executive in top management. My 3yrs contract is due in 3mths comes Sept 11 and I am seriuosly thinking of quiting and being my own boss. I have read your book on Mindset Mastery and it has set my mind to think seriuosly about quiting. I am at a cross roads of my life and I think itt is time to quit the rat race or be another statistic of the rat race.
Thanks for sharing Sean. Very inspiring and encouraging.
Cheers,
Jean
Hi Sean,
Thanks for sharing your story, like you I have listened to hundreds of speakers and thousands of CDs and only have just recently done something about doing what you did and actually done something. Thanks again for your story, it give me a target for the future.
Thanks again for sharing, its always great to heard real stories.
All the best
JB
Sean, great lifestory! Just got back from a weekend in Karratha and I can fully understand what you are talking about. I can see why a lot of people are ‘stuck’ there, and these people are on big money! It was an eyeopener.
My hubby is currently working in the mines and we actually love our lifestyle here in the bush (tom price) his roster is 6 on 6 off and the kids are having a fantastic time enjoying motorbikeriding, hiking and living in a safe environment without lots of traffic. We like to be here for a few years until we are financial independent or until we are not happy anymore. I am educating myself about mindset at the moment and love my journey so far. In the last year I have learned a lot from your blog and all the other newsletters I am signed up to. I know I will live in abundance in the future and that I have to overcome a few more challenges for now. But every day is getting better and better. Isn’t that all part of the process?! You are right about the media, they don’t tell you everything or make something insignificant worldnews, just to get people to buy the papers or watch their shows. I personally don’t watch those things anymore and sometimes hear from family about how the crisis could affect our time uphere. If people only just spend some more time reading about what REALLY matters in life instead of worrying about what MIGHT happen and create fear, the world would be a different place.
Sean I would like to meet you one day, Have you still got your keeshond? I know exactly what sort of a dog that is. ( I’m dutch)
Well what can I say about this wonderful man Sean Rasmussen, that has not been said before repeatedly by so many folks that have been exposed to him and had their lives changed for ever. I am one such person who was like Sean , except I had worked for 40 yrs in the rat race, and like a gift from the universe I have been rescued and am now a friend of Sean & Cherie, who have taken me under their wing and taught me to make the changes required to leave the rat race.
Forever Grateful……….

Once again: thanks everyone
It’s great to hear your feedback and how you relate to my story, though the story is such a small fraction of my life. I appreciate your comments.
Brenda. Zac, our Keeshond passed away while we lived in Karratha about 5 years ago. He was a dear friend and it feel like he was my closest mate sometimes. Dogs are great company as they never argue and push their opinions upon you
Inspirational Sean!
Your story has inspired so many to follow in your footsteps, including me.
Keep up the good work make… Blessed to be a blessing!

I have loved this story since I heard it the first time from you. Pain is a big motivator, so is the fear of death. I am so glad you made it before it was too late, your wife and family would never be the same without you. Well done.

Hi Sean,
A great inspiring story Sean. By a lovely man devoted to his family. Success couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. You set your mind to it and you did it. You got out of the rat-race and now you are inspiring 100′s to do the same, including me.
You are living proof it can be done. Best news of all is that you are sharing your knowledge with other inspiring Internet Marketers. Word of mouth is getting out and more people are finding out about Sean Resmussen every day. We will soon need to expand the forum to fit everyone in and won’t that be fun ?!

Hi Sean
I think my heart just skipped a beat when you said your original “release date” was 15 January 2006. Four years later, on 15 January 2010, was my official last day in my job too. We should lobby the government to make it a public holiday!
I learn something new every time I read or hear your story. I wonder what you think when you look back at those days and the person you were then. I wonder if you look back at all. I think you would, because reflection is a good thing. And reminding yourself of how far you’ve come.
Let’s not forget the beautiful woman you had with you every step of the way.
Good on you.

Hi Sean,
Can I just say that I love your hair? You look like a rockstar!:)
I always love hearing your story. It’s very inspirational and we can all learn a lot from your example. I’m very glad that you weren’t hurt by that pole because it would have been such a huge loss to everyone. It also emphasizes that we need to appreciate every moment because life can change in the blink of an eye.
Hi Sean,
your story is truly inspirational – because it is a real-life-story with ups and downs. But you are the living example that we can take our life in our own hands and do something about the things we don’t like in it.
Thanks for sharing your story and thanks for supporting so many of us on our way to fire our boss!

You are a true inspiration. I look forward to the day when I can too fire the boss

I fired my boss for a year and am learning it has its ups and downs. I’m still not clear on if I want to continue working from home so am thankful for this trial run knowing I have a job I love if I want it when November rolls around. Working from home has its definite perks and if you have good friends and don’t mind missing the social aspect it is something to look into.

Hello Sean,
I have read this story and commented before, but after re-reading it again tonight I wanted to let you know that you inspired David and I when we heard your story in Brisbane awhile back.
David is now working from home, and we have more choices in our life than ever before. Ask, and wait for your life to change. Be very aware of what you do ask for because the universe will provide.
Cheers
Lisa

Pearl diving seems like an amazing adventure but something that would humble you as well. You know first hand that it takes hard work, risk and determination to dive as deep as necessary to find the beauty within. Now you are the ocean and your success is the pearl, less dangerous and more rewarding. Enjoy your family and your adventure.

Hi Sean,
Your boys were so small not so long ago, they’re adorable. Look how far you and your family have come even since this article was posted. Your son’s can catch a delicious fish for lunch and play you a beautiful piece on the piano.
Life is good!

Hi Sean
A spelling mistake in paragraph “Be Careful What You Ask For!”
‘it would have takes at least’ should be ‘it would have taken’
Hi Sean
Thakyou for sharing your story ‘Escape from Paid Slavery’. It is encouraging as I have done this too and working on creating more streams of income.
Having one stream of income is not very wise. Internet marketing can be overwhelming to learn at times as there are so many facets to it, but what is the point of giving up? I want to create many streams of income and then work on some more goals.
Thankyou for being succesful and then providing an education for us.
