The Perceived Illusion

by Sean Rasmussen on May 9, 2008

Someone once said: Life is 1% perception and 99% perspiration. I tend to think it’s a little different to that. We can perceive things as pleasure or pain depending on what we see, hear or feel. A magician, or illusionist, will make us see something and contort our thoughts into thinking something else is happening.

Have a look at this video and see what is going through this guys brain when he encounters the “illusion”. Prepare to laugh!

The Perceived Illusion

I had to pick myself up off the floor after seeing this one. I hope you enjoyed this one as much as I did. I’d say this guy is experiencing 100% perception and 500% pain.

Have a most outstanding day

I saw this trick done at a party once, years ago. Needless to say, it brought the house down with laughter. The poor guy on the receiving end found it funny only once he knew what had happened.

Pretyy good eh bro (pronounced “brew”)

His perception was definately his reality though wouldn’t you agree”

While we are on the theme of funny NZ youtube clips have you seen the one about the beached whale titeled Beached As (propounced – bitched as brew).
Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZdVHZwI8pcA
Make sure you’re not trying to it chups when you watch this one brew.

Sean-I love it! It shows clearly how our perception changes our reality.

What is interesting is how we do this in our own lives. Not get whacked in the head, but view things through our own filter/mood/attitude.

Verrry funny. Just wondering if the commercial is an illusion, ie. are they actors? Then you have several layers of illusion?

Hi TRCoach. That thought did pass through my mind. I have seen this trick at a party and I can see how the ‘recipient’ is easily tricked. Most people, instinctively, only look past their nose and that becomes their reality. That is why magicians (illusionists) can fool people so easily with very simple tricks.
Chances are, it is a commercial as the guy on the left is drinking Lift, not a beer.

He was lucky… I’ve seen the trick done with a soup spoon. You know, the big one that you scoop soup out of a saucepan with ;)

Hi Sean,

That is so funny. That poor guy. It must have hurt like hell.

He was pretty tough though, he didn’t give in no matter how much it hurt. :)

Hi Sean,

Hmmm Not sure if I am convinced it wasn’t a setup but did you say you have seen this trick played on someone at a party, Sean? …so you could relate to it and see the funny side!

Sorry it didn’t do much for me – They were all so serious themselves as well, sorry :) (It might be a man thing)

I remember seeing this video last year… funny stuff! I thought at the time – this guy must be a silly bugger not picking up on what’s going on.

My perception still stands – he must know cause you would feel the ‘wind’ of someone’s arm behind you doing that!!!! Or is he a complete moron!!!!!

Definitely a funny video – with friends like that, who needs enemies? I’ve seen similar sorts of set ups and a lot seems to depend whether the victim trusts those who are helping to create the image.

I agree that the mind can be easily tricked in to perceiving things a certain way – one of the reasons that eyewitness testimony is so unreliable, as it often reflects what a person thought they saw more than what they actually did.

Hello Sean,

I have seen this clip on YouTube so many times and laugh every single time. I showed my boys the clip, with the clear instructions that they were not allowed to play the trick on their younger brothers :)

The pain from the spoon must of hurt, seeing him go back for me…..That’s beyond funny. It is such a great Video to send to friends as I always get back a email to say thanks for making their day brighter.

Love it.

Cheers

G’day Sean,
The bloke in the centre must be deaf if he can’t hear the difference between his hits and the combined hits of his opponent and the bloke on the left of picture. Didn’t tickle my funnybone like the John Cleese ” parrot ” funny previously. That was a classic

To each his own humor style, I suppose. It’s strange how 2 people can be able to appreciate some of the other bloke’s humor, but rarely all. Keep on with more funnies.
Cheers
Harry

We all live an illusion within an illusion. Thought creates. Billions of people before us have created the generally accepted illusion. To this we add our own personally generated illusion. This video is an illustration of what nearly everybody experiences every day in life. We are both the joker and the victim of the joke. The joke is on us. Knowing this we can create the illusion we want, maybe we can even think and grow rich.

Outch ;)
That shows how hard we want to proof that what we think is there is reality – in his case that it can’t really hurt because it’s not supposed to. Better trust your instincts ;)
