Mindset Mastery 41 – Captains Of Our Souls

Mindset Mastery ebook by Sean RasmussenFor the next point Napoleon Hill quotes a famous line by the poet Henley; and while the quote itself is quite inspiring, and altogether true, Mr. Hill found it to be just a bit lacking. By taking the idea a step beyond waxing poetic, Hill gives more meaning and direction to us, his readers.

YOU ARE “THE MASTER OF YOUR FATE, THE CAPTAIN OF YOUR

SOUL,” BECAUSE…

When Henley wrote the prophetic lines, “I am the Master of my Fate, I am the Captain of my Soul,” he should have told us why that is true; we are the Masters of our Fate, the Captains of our Souls, because we have the power to control our thoughts.

He should have told us that the universe where our earth resides, where we move, where we live and breathe and be, is a form of constantly moving energy, and that this universe is filled with a form of universal power which adapts itself to the nature of our thoughts; and influences us, in natural ways, over time and circumstance, to turn our thoughts into their physical equivalent.

Captains of our Souls

If the poet had told us this great truth, we would know why it is that we are the Masters of our Fate, the Captains of our Souls. He should have told us, and greatly emphasized, that this power does not distinguish between destructive thoughts and constructive thoughts, that it will just as easily cause us to translate thoughts of poverty into physical reality, as it will influence us to act upon thoughts of wealth.

Masters Of Failure

Napoleon Hill’s clarification does more to shape our thoughts towards wealth and success. It shows that yes, we are in fact our own Masters, but we can be Masters of failure just easily as we can be Masters of success—it’s all in how we harness that ability, and the direction we point our thoughts in.

I will see you back here every Monday and Friday for the continuation of the Mindset Mastery series.

Next time I will talk about Magnetizing Your Mind for success.

  1. Since reading mindset mastery, and following your blogs and posts, then implementing your teaching & wisdom my life has changed dramatically for the better and now I understand just how powerful my thoughts are & how to use them. Also I now know that every individual has the same thought power, the sad part being they will never experience its true power until they open their minds ,accept it exists and learn how to apply it to their lives.

Sean it is through people with the committment you have to helping others acheive their true potential, that more indeviduals may come to change how they use their thoughts , you certainly have done that for me & I want to congratulate & thank you for that.
I want to take what you have taught me and assist you in future to help more ,as I perfect how to get the message across.

    Hi Sean,
I strongly believe that what we think and say, we will into existence. One of the best examples I have ever read that illustrates this point is in the Susan Jeffer’s book, “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”.
Susan has a volunteer stand, hold their arms out to the side and clench their fists. Next, Susan has them think positive thoughts, like, “I am a strong and worthy person”. Susan tries to push their arms down and can’t.
Next, Susan has the person repeat the stance but this time she has the volunteer think negative thoughts. This time Susan easily pushes their arms down.
I was amazed at the results when I tried this at home. It really taught me how powerful thoughts can be and how we need to guard our thoughts well.
I really believe that what we think about, we will create in our lives.

  3. I like that line “Master of my fate, Captain of my Soul”.
If you look at sailing as a metaphor you need to know where you want to go and keep it in your sight, no matter what the circumstances. If you do that you will adjust your course to master obstacles like bad weather or land being “in your way”. As long as you are in charge and make the right decisions you will reach your target eventually.
The same is true for our daily life. Our thoughts are great shipmates, but I have to make sure I am in control, take the final decisions and give the commands. Otherwise my thoughts get lazy if the going get’s tough.
Yes, i am the Captain of my Soul – and I plan to stay there 🙂

  4. The quote is from Henley’s poem “Invictus”, which is Latin for (on a quick google search) “unconquerable” or “undefeated”.

  5. Hi Sean,
“We have the power to control our thoughts” by Henley

We do have the power but it’s not easy to control thoughts. Are there any road maps on how to control your thoughts when of course not reading positive affirmations including Sean’s books, etc ?

    Jill.

    • Jazz Salinger says:

      Hi Jill,

There are lots of different approaches but I find the one that works best for me is the direct approach. I talk back to my negative thoughts. I replace each negative thought immediately with a positive one. I find that I constantly have to work at it though because the negative thoughts seem to keep right on coming. I’m still a work in progress. 🙂

      • Hi Jazz
Those nasty little negatives have a way of creeping in when you least expect them but when they do come in they are ushered out and replaced with even stronger positives they do not stand a chance.

  6. You know, I’m thinking that this might well become the ‘Age of Because’ – and not just for the reason that I like to know why. As we grow up, we start to make our choices better (hopefully) for the very reasons that we explore all around the choices for the ‘good way’. I think more of us are ‘growing up’, – while I have met a myriad of 5 year old children, there are a lot of us still not knowing the ‘why’ when we head towards our last sleep. There is something to be said about ignorance being bliss, but we perhaps bought too easily the old thoughts of ‘no fun when you are grown up – except of course when I am the boss/king/dictator’. That old thought, to me, was one of the worst paradigms; awareness doesn’t bring harsh reality – real awareness leads to great things – and if that in itself isn’t enjoyable, then I don’t know what is!

  8. Hi Sean,
Very true! We shape our own future with our thoughts. I do try to be aware of my thoughts and if they are negative I will not entertain them at all.

Also an unproductive thought. I have found myself going over a conversation I had in the past with someone and going over it for no particular reason. It’s a bit of a worry but probably happens because I do spend a lot of time alone. I am becoming much better with practice at controlling my thoughts.

  9. Hi Sean

It is absolutely true that we have no control over thoughts. Just try to stop them pouring in on a daily basis and see if you can. If you were in control of your thoughts, why would you ever have a negative one?.

It is easy to read and discard this but if you truly look within and do some investigation, you will see that what I say is true and it could be a huge liberating discovery as you will no longer feel guilty or berate yourself for all the crazy thoughts you have.

Now here is the remedy (I wasn’t going to leave you with a cart load of thoughts to try and dump).Just be vigilant of your thoughts and don’t chase those negative ones. It’s what you do with those thoughts that will give you control.

We need to stop lamenting about the past and fearing the future. When thoughts like that come up, chuck them. Like you said in this post Sean “it’s all in how we harness that ability, and the direction we point our thoughts in”. We can choose to point the negative ones towards and into the rubbish bin and point the positives into action – send them on to work for you, in which ever way possible (with you taking action as well)!

To be mindful of thought we must be focusing on the present, yes set our goals and dreams, do our visualisations, and then be vigilant just like the title of one of my favourite books “You Can’t Afford The Luxury Of A Negative Thought”. Weed out those nasties fast.

    Blessings
    Elly

    • Hi Elly,

This is great advice. Negative thoughts are a problem. I find it easier to talk back to them and turn them into positives each and every time they show up. I find this makes them lessen in intensity.

I like your point about valuing the present time. The past will drag you back into it if you’ll let it. You have to make a conscious effort to always be in the present moment.

It was pointed out to me once , that the human mind cannot hold two consecutive thoughts but only oscillate between them, so by thinking negative thoughts we can easily spiral down into depression , and therefore the opposite must be true that by thinking positive thoughts we can lift ourselves above negativity and all that baggage that goes with it .

  11. Elizabeth says:

Captains of Souls and Masters of Fate… Those are two really important sounding titles. Think about this… You, yes, YOU are a MASTER of FATE. Fate and destiny are two of the most important aspects of our lives. The words are steeped in mystery and fraught with drama. These aspects are said to be in control of our lives and are completely neutral, neither for us or against us. And now we are told that WE are the ones in control. That’s powerful. And it’s all in your mindset.

Hmm, I think this is working into a blog post, so I’m going to stop here. 😀 I’ll post a link when I get it posted. 😀

  12. No truer words ever spoken! “we can be Masters of failure just easily as we can be Masters of success—it’s all in how we harness that ability, and the direction we point our thoughts in.”

We are the ones responsible for our lives and the path it takes
