Mindset Mastery 174 – Something For Nothing

Mindset Mastery eBookYou may recall that at the end of the last Mindset Mastery post Napoleon Hill was talking about the fact that the opportunity in capitalist systems exists for everyone, meaning that any willing body is certainly capable and can Think and Grow Rich. However, that is an opportunity that requires a certain level of understanding as well.

Denied No Right

The “System” denies no one this right, but it does not, and cannot promise something for nothing because the system, itself, is irrevocably controlled by the Law of Economics which neither recognizes nor tolerates for long, getting without giving.

The Law of Economics was passed by Nature! There is no Supreme Court to which violators of this law may appeal. The law hands out both penalties for its violation, and appropriate rewards for its observance, without interference or the possibility of interference by any human being. The law cannot be repealed. It is as fixed as the stars in the heavens, and subject to, and a part of, the same system that controls the stars.

Can one refuse to adapt one’s self to the Law of Economics?

Certainly! All people have the privilege of ignoring the Law of Economics.

Actions And Consequences

What happens then?

Well, nothing happens until large numbers of people join forces for the avowed purpose of ignoring the law, and taking what they want by force.

Then enter the Dictator, with well organized firing squads and machine guns!

We have not yet reached that stage in America! But we have heard all we want to know about how the system works. Perhaps we will continue to be fortunate enough not to demand personal knowledge of so gruesome a reality. Doubtless we shall prefer to continue with our freedom of speech, freedom of deed, and freedom to render useful service in return for riches.

The practice of Government officials extending to men and women the privilege of raiding the public treasury in return for votes sometimes results in election, but as night follows day, the final payoff comes; when every penny wrongfully used must be repaid with compound interest on compound interest. If those who make the grab are not forced to repay, the burden falls on their children, and their children’s children, “even unto the third and fourth generations.” There is no way to avoid the debt.

The Law Steps In

Men can, and sometimes do, form themselves into groups for the purpose of crowding wages up, and working hours down. There is a point beyond which they cannot go. It is the point at which the Law of Economics steps in, and the sheriff gets both the employer and the employees.

To offer translation yet again, these instances can be seen as a call, a reaching out to responsible citizens and wealth creators to take care now to build wealth of our own, without taking handouts and perceived entitlements, so that we do not leave our children in more financial straights than what we are in ourselves. All the opportunity anyone needs to create wealth is before them now. Any man or woman can utilize the principles in this book to build more than enough wealth for a lifetime of enjoyment, and a secure future for the generations yet to come.

A Call to Action

The point Napoleon Hill is making here is an important one, probably more so today than in his day. People have come increasingly to believe that they are entitled to wealth. In reality we need to work and put forth the effort to build that wealth. Understanding this alone will take you far toward success. The only people entitled to wealth are those willing to seize their own opportunities!

  1. Dear Sean,
I ask you to post my reply for ALL to see and would you be so kind as to explain why it is so.
Your quote: Law of Economics which neither recognizes nor tolerates for long, getting without giving.
My reply: A friend of mine thinks all this is a lot of hogwash. Has never and will never chant or think positive thoughts. When he won first prize in the lotto many years ago I asked him if he thought rich, visualised being rich, did he ever have pictures of himself with a home of his own and the owner of two cars and all that he needs, trips to London and to live in complete comfort.
This is what he had to say to me in reply to my question. “You stupid or something Donald” He then doubled up laughing.
But Sean, I still NEVER gave up, now he is even richer and I am down to NOTHING. No car, no home, live by myself, but I have to say, loving it.
I have pictures of the home I would like, and a car I would like pasted on the walls, I think rich all the time, bless all the nothing I have, knowing all that I ask for will be given me. All my thoughts have come from people like you and Napoleon Hill, Stuart Wilde and more recently in the past 2/3 years “THE SECRET” and the Power Of Attraction. I have to say all positive books told me to give, I kept giving and now I have nothing to give. While all the people I gave to are doing fine and have no wish to help me in my hour of need.
You write: Doubtless we shall prefer to continue with our freedom of speech, freedom of deed, and freedom to render useful service in return for riches.
What of the US medical service? Enter the Dictator. Not with guns or firing squads, but with an army of lawyers to demand everything you have for the exorbitant fees the medical profession (dictators) that will kill you in the end (only they do ever so slowly) as they see to it you are thrown out on the street to starve. Have you not seen the movie “SICKO” What of the children your armies have blown parts of their little bodies off? All for “The Law Of Economics.” Tell me, what do YOU expect them to do? Will you damn them for not contributing to make others rich. Maybe you will tell us they deserve what they get because they are not contributing to every ones wealth including yours.
I take it you think we will get nothing if we don’t give. It is a wonderful thing to give and not in the way, that I will give you something only if you give me something in return.
We are not ALL young people bounding with health and working all day and night, and if we do that only then can we receive. Did all that when I was young and bounding with health, then along came the vultures (Lawyers, Dr, Dentists and all those that cry poor when they are not.) and chipped away with what little I had.
I would like an honest reply to this letter but I won’t hold my breath. I read all you ask of me to read and lately I am beginning to realize, if I were to take your advice on all the negatives you tell us about all that is lurking in the dark corners, then maybe, It would be better for me to dig a hole and jump in it and then get someone to bury me.
Looking back on my life, I can honestly say my troubles started when I was introduced to all this positive thinking 28 years ago. All the negative people I know are doing fine and all the positive people I know are struggling. Way back then I had a family, a beautiful home, a nice new car and life was wonderful.
The “System” of the heart “LOVE” cares nothing for the Law Of Economics. When people turn to their heart, they will find “Getting Without Giving” means nothing as we will all be giving to each other, to make sure the sick, the frail, those down on their luck will be given a helping hand.
You wrote: In reality we need to work and put forth the effort to build that wealth. Understanding this alone will take you far toward success. The only people entitled to wealth are those willing to seize their own opportunities!
Tell that to all the men that have been blown up fighting wars so you can tell them they are not entitled to live in peace and have wealth, tell it to the children, you don’t care for them but then, no one cares for them. Did I hear you say you all do, you do care very much. BS, if everyone cared there would be no killings and no wars. After all, you would have to agree the moment you step into another country and start murdering others you are the DICTATORS. You have the guns to prove it and you decide to produce sick weapons to use on them that disfigures the unborn babies.
Think and grow rich, how about think and grow to love one another
Love and peace to all the people of the world.

    • Hi Donald
I’m sure you are aware that the “Mindset Mastery” articles are excepts from “Think and Grow Rich”. Those are Napoleon Hill’s words from the book, not my opinions. Have you read the book? He talks of wealth, but money is only one part of wealth. Napoleon Hill himself was not a financially wealthy man.
I don’t agree with wars or killing children. The mere suggestion of that is an insult. Your negative ‘rich’ friends are possibly only negative in your perception. What makes them negative? We all have opinions, but no opinions are ever the truth; they are just opinions.
      Thanks for your feedback, Donald.

    • Hello Donald,

You have some very strong words to let off your chest. I was wondering if you have really watched “The Secret” and have read books based on the Law Of Attraction. Because what you put out there )no matter what it is – postive or negative) it will come back. Maybe you need to look for a better group of friends, and look within to see what is really important to your self. Money is only the end result. Actually its not what is important. Its the Truth, The Belief, The Journey, The Faith, The Love, The Family….all that is around is that is important. Please Donald ask for what you really want – then wait to see it being received.
Another idea that works well for us is Visualization. We are changing our life day by day with Using Visualization along with Law Of Attraction.
      Hope that helps you

  2. Andrew Sinclair says:

Donald, could you please mind your tone? I’ve spent twenty years fighting bullies who have literally become drug traffickers, and even I was never this bitter.

My decision to put Information Technology before the study of economics was the best mistake I ever made; I have never been dependent on any career criminal in my life.

  3. The message I receive from this post is that the law of economics is ruthlessly exacting. There is no such thing as something for nothing. Give and receive in balance or, sooner or later, there will be consequences that bring about balance.

  4. Sometimes if I try to look at the big picture and especially without correct facts before me and, in many situations, it does seem like the bad guys are winning and that there is no justice – Possibly though, the lesson in the teachings here by Napoleon Hill is that – an answer to an outside problem could be in me changing my thinking – By adopting the NH philosophies I think I can take better charge of my life.

  5. I can relate to some points that Don raises – “All the negative people I know are doing fine and all the positive people I know are struggling”.

I also see many people who work hard, are honest, helpful and thoughtful of others struggle to get through life while the people who lie, cheat, are dis-honest and simply cruise their way through life have the cars, money, houses, etc.

I have never been one to shy away from hard work. I believe I am honest and helpful to others. I treat others as I would expect to be treated myself. While I don’t really follow in all that karma stuff – I do believe what goes around comes around.

    • As the story goes, being rich is not all about having money in the bank. I, for one, feel as if I’ve already won the lottery as I know what I want to do with my life and I’m doing it. I have a wonderful family, a positive attitude and the perspective that it doesn’t matter what my neighbour did or does to get to where he/she is as long as I’m in the place I want to be.

We shouldn’t concern ourselves with what others do for money but bask in the glory that is our own lives, in wealth, health and happiness. So someone may have more money than you – does that mean you should lose yourself because of the easy way out? Would that really be the easy way out?

I am a writer and we all know how much money comes in from that but it’s who I am and I come by it honestly. Each hard earned cent is spent wisely and I’m in love with myself for giving myself up to who I am instead of the monetary riches which come with selling myself short.

  6. It’s interesting to read that already in Napoleons Hill time people started to have this sense of “entitlement”. But what do they think they are entitled to? In the developed countries around the world we have so much and still expect more?

In the big picture you can only get if you give. That doesn’t mean money only, but everything is an exchange. Sometimes money is involved, sometimes time (having a good chat with a friend), sometimes an emotional exchange. But always an exchange.
I agree with Wal, there is not such thing as something for nothing.

In answer to Donald’s post – I don’t think “thinking positive” is enough and the tone in your post doesn’t sound very positive to me. Be the change you want to see in the world as Ghandi said. Don’t complain about what others say or do (or not do).

  7. I used to be an office manager for 7.5 years… working my fingers to the bone – working 10-11 hour days (in the last 8 months I was working there). Sure I was getting alot of money but I WAS NOT HAPPY. I was buying nice clothes, shoes etc but it only made me feel good temporarily. I was so stressed & under pressure – my best friend who I also live with said I was terrible to be with because I was always “snappy.”

“Money” does not make you wealthy. Let me just repeat that – MONEY DOES NOT MAKE ANYONE WEALTHY!!!!!! Money seems to be equated with wealth. Money is just energy.

I know that explicitly now. I feel it to the very core of my soul. In the end I was pushed – which I feel more comfortable talking about & I will write about in a blog in my 1 year Anniversary of “the gift of freedom” in May. So I wont go into that here – as funny as it is now. My point is “how you see things” – choice… everyone has choices. Why do people think that life is thrusted upon them & they are forced to do things “they don’t want to do?”

What do you choice to focus on? Where your energy flows, your energy goes. My energy goes into my comedy, internet marketing, personal growth – I choose to come from the highest place possible.

  8. I am a big believer in what goes around, comes around. So using systems that are proven to work, builds worth. Building Wealth is easy, knowing how to use the right knowledge to keep the wealth is another matter altogther. Its whats in your “Headspace” that will create the wealth. Its how you use your headspace that makes all the difference. Hopefully we will never be like some countries, where our children take on our mortgages after we pass away – that would be far too sad for words.
Reading the Book “Think and Grow Rich” is one step closer to having all the wealth you need.

  9. “The only people entitled to wealth are those who seize their own opportunities”
Sometimes I feel like I seize the opprotunities so readily that I end upwith my fingers in too many pies!

  10. Expecting something is return for nothing is crazy thinking. Yet there are many who think this way. All that I have today is a direct result of the efforts or energy that I have applied in the past.
In my time, one thing I have worked out is the “Harder I work the Luckier I get”.

  11. Jazz Salinger says:

    Hi Sean,

I have never had a problem with feeling entitled to money or things. I’ve always known that I am the only one who owes me anything. If I want something I have to work for it.

We all have the opportunity to be successful. The principles of success are there for anyone who wants to harness their power. I think if we work at creating the right mindset; we will have everything we desire. We just have to put the effort in first.

  12. When we do for ourselves because it pleases us, and because it does good for others around us – are we not pleased? When we do good to prove to others our own worth- why are we surprised when no-one looks? When we believe in ourselves and our actions, we are satisfied and fulfilled.. is this not a richness? Creating wealth is as easy as 123.. there is a plethora of examples everywhere.. so perhaps a better question for us could be “how can I do this too.”

    • Very powerful, Jo. Doing for others can certainly be pleasing but if we can do what we love and do for others that is the ultimate. I’ve written a novel recently and had my father in law, a man who doesn’t enjoy reading, volunteer to read my book and can’t stop talking about how much he enjoyed it. This is pure delight as I loved writing it and never imagined having him read it.
.-= Sarah Butland´s last blog ..I Am Attracting You and Your Vote Via Law Of Attraction =-.

    • Hi Jo,

You make an excellent point. If you do something good only to earn brownie points with someone else, it’s not done in the spirit of giving. I don’t think the universe rewards you when you have a ulterior motive.

I love your attitude to creating wealth. I often touch things that I want but can’t afford and say to myself; I can have this car, couch etc. But, I love your, ‘how can I do this too’. It gives your subconscious mind a question to work on and a way to find a plan.
.-= Jazz Salinger´s last blog ..Finding Your Passion =-.

  13. Of course those of us with clear minds understand that there is never something for nothing.

What you receive is a direct result of the effort put in. Plain and simple. Maybe it is the welfare systems put in place but bastardised is the reason. If they were kept as intended there wouldn’t be this perception.
.-= Gee´s last blog ..Why You Should Just Ignore Fad Diets (Part 2) =-.

    • I agree. I’m not one to take away from people who need it most but I too often see people abusing their handouts. For instance, doors are left open in the dead of winter (I’m in Canada, it’s cold!) but their heat is turned up to the max to compensate. They don’t understand the value of money because they don’t have to earn it.

But the ones who deserve the money and respect it, who need to be on welfare due to a disability etc are getting a bad rep because of all the ones who don’t deserve what they get.
